I try to appreciate what everyone rights and respect it - but the number of cats that end up on lost and found websites, the number of calls we get to go pick up a cat lying dead on the street after being hit by a car, the number of calls we get from people who have lost their cat, etc. - these include cats with street smarts. A speeding car (and as we know, no one respects the speed limits anymore) and a cat crossing the street - the cat never wins. It is heartbreaking when I see this each and every time. A cat doesn't have the knowledge of what dangers it faces outside. A number of cats were poisoned in the Montreal area by people's neighbors who put poisoned meat in their garbage knowing what would happen. Also there were some sickos driving around a Montreal area at night time taking people's cats for unkind purposes (animal testing, animal abuse). As I said, we would never think of opening the door and letting our dog out to fend for itself on the streets, in backyards, etc. while we go off to work - why is it considered acceptable for cats? And I know for a fact that our local animal catchers have no conscience about trapping and grabbing a cat, whether it belongs to someone or not - and don't think the tag on your cat's collar makes much of a difference. Take it from someone in the know and if you love them, you will keep them safe inside.

Please have your pets sterilized as soon as possible to lower, and one day hopefully eliminate, unwanted and abandoned pets. It IS our responsibility. Adopting from a shelter also helps - encouraging breeders just adds to the overpopulation.
