With digital pix there is the problem of Aspect Ratio (particularly if you're cropping), pixel size, and DPI (which printers use).

If you're having a lab do the work, most of them have an online site where you can do the cropping and see what it will look like prior to ordering, and they'll specify their pixel requirements. If you're printing at home the charts on those sites will help give you an idea.

I need to know what the minimum pixels should be to make a good 11x14 picture printed using a photo developing place. The picture was taken with a DSLR camera. I don't want to crop too much and make the picture too small and distorted. So basically I want to know how much I can crop and still have enough for a good picture that can be enlarged.

You need to ask the place that will be doing the print, as it tends to be device-specific.

Moesha, you might want to consider trying Shutterfly.com

You can upload the picture to there, use their options to zoom in, which will in-a-sense crop out the extra unwanted areas around the subject of the photo. You can "preview" how it will look.

I use Shutterfly all the time for getting prints.

Assuming the picture needs no correction other than cropping. For a 11x14 picture printed on 200 dpi printer to have a decent picture, a 6,5 megapixal camera would be enough. Below is
the calculation used to make this determination,

200 dpi is rule of thumb to get a film quality. Now calculate total pixals reeded on 11x14 photo.

Multiply the width x 200......Multiply the height x 200
200x11=2200 ................. 200x14=2800
multply width pixals x the Helght pixals = total pixals needed for a 200 dpi image for a 11x14 picture.

2200x2800= 6,160,000 = 6,1 megapixal required

This is a guessamate. Most SLR have 6.5+ megapixals unless this is an older camera.

I had found that formula and using the 300dpi formula also, Kokopup. But they had not figured out the 11x14 for me. I guess I was too lazy to try to figure that out for myself. I think that you explained it a little more simply than the two sites I had found. But thanks so much for doing that. My SLR is more than 6 megapixels, so I hope that it works out for them.

300x11= 3300 300x14=4200

3300x4200= 13,860,000

13,860,000= 13.8 megapixils
