Ferrets are domestic animals. Sugar gliders and hedgehogs are always sold there. It has nothing to do with the promoters, but the vendors. There just weren't many vendors there. This has been going on for 36? years now I think, and every year exotics are for sale. Even the bird and reptile section had almost nothing. It's just very odd. And the alligator man didn't even show up.He's there every year. I always look forward to petting that alligator. The skunk lady wasn't there either.
The whole purpose of the show is to sell and trade exotic animals. Everyone who goes there already has exotics (most everyone anyway), that's why they attend. Hmm...not sure what happened this year. Oh come to think of it they did have a few chinchillas.![]()
Also it wasn't a pet expo. It is an exotic animals expo. If it was a regular pet expo I wouldn't have gone. Not to say our regular pets aren't awesome, but I go to see the exotics.
On the whole permit thing... ferrets, sugar gliders, hedgehogs, possums, etc. are sold in almost every pet store here. You do not need a permit. They are considered a regular every day pet. The only animal I see being rehomed constantly are sugar gliders. They are always on craigslist. Always. It's very sad.
People just don't understand what they're getting into with these guys. I have two and find them very easy to take care of. I love my little gliders, however I do see how they can become expensive to feed. I buy fresh fruit and vegetables daily for my guys...not to mention the amount of veggies and fruits I buy for my tortoises. It adds up, but to me it's totally worth it. I wish other people shared the same views. However, just like domestic pets they do sometimes need to be rehomed. There's a huge conversation on Craigslist right now about sugar gliders, rehoming, and proper care. I'm glad people in Eugene are taking the time to do something, albeit small, about their constant buying and selling.
Karen, you are too funny!!!We've been on a huge Dr. Seuss roll after Horton Hears A Who came out.
I will most deffinately keep everyone updated on these little guys. They are just too funny. They will eat anything in site. Maybe I will upload a video of them later if I can figure out how to get it off my phone and onto my computer.![]()
