Actually newspaper is fine, most papers use a soy based ink which is safe. You do however want to stay away from colored ink as that is toxic. Aspen is also fine, pine and cedar are bad because they have phenols (scented oil in the wood) Carefresh is my favorite bedding though, that's what I used for my rats.
