I don't think Kim meant you can't use that word. She's just saying that's what she calls the markings, not what a vet or a breeder would call them. It's just a cute nickname. For example, when I was a little girl, I didn't know what torties were so I called them 'dark calicos' because I thought that's what they were. Even though I know the name now, I still call them dark calicos alot. You can use it if you want but it's not the correct term that a show breeder would use. In fact, a show breeder's face might turn the color of a 'dark calico' if you registered your kitty as that!
