Sounds like the horse disease that was killing dogs in Florida. It killed mostly greyhounds, but eventually the sickness started to affect dogs in shelters and rescues. There was a catahoula pup that died from the disease -- the body was to be autopsied, but unfortunaly they didn't get the transport soon enough.
