Something very similar happened to Murph. He was playing with Oz and fell off him and hit hard on his tail. He seemed to be fine at that time, but that night, his tail was down between his legs. He wasn't yelping or acting in pain, other then his tail position. I took him to the vet the next day and the vet said it looked fine to him, cuz Murph was even trying to wag it in that low position.

After I explained that that was not the normal position for a Cairn, he took a x-ray and sure enough his tail was fractured. Only thing he did was give Murph Rimadyl tablets. I gave those to him for a couple of days and I would say within 2-3 days, Murph was carrying his tail up and wagging it like normal. No ill effects whatsoever from it. You wouldn't even know he'd ever fractured it.
