We do not have that problem as, when Miss Hoppy is doing her twice-yearly "big shed" I pet her outside, and all the bunny hair floats away on the breeze. Literally - it is so light it just floats in the air for quite a while. I am confident that baby birds in our neighborhood grow up in the softest-lined nests ever!
As for the butter thing, in my case, the dog doesnt mind LICKING the butter....
