The filter media is an excellent idea, as long as it is maintained.

There may be an issue with the defrost time clock causing the ice build up. Normally a plugged condenser coil/area won't cause an ice up problem but will cause a cooling problem.

BUT I don't really work on residential equipment, mainly supermarkets.
