I have to say that the Cairn Terrier is my favorite too. We have one and his name is Sammy. He is a high energy dog, with lots of personality. We (my boyfriend and I) love him dearly. However, we feel he is getting lonely and want to get another dog. Do you reccomend getting another Cairn or a different breed?

PS.. I am a newby here.
Hiya sammy's mom!

Murph was my first Cairn and I got another Cairn, when he was 6 mos old, Maddie. As puppies, they got along pretty well, played together and everything. As they matured though, Maddie got very dominant with Murph and he wasn't exactly gung ho to back down, so they had many lil' squabbles. As Maddie became a senior and got more cranky, they had more frequent lil' fights, but as bad as they sounded sometimes, they never escalated past some hair yanking.

When they were both around 11, I got a Smooth Collie, Oz. He was perfect for both of them. He and Murph loved to play with each other and he and Maddie loved to nap with each other. Oz has a very non-challenging personality, so it was real easy for him to fit in with both of them. I also felt he was big enough so that they couldn't hurt him, but with that gentle personality, he wouldn't try to hurt them either. I was really more worried about the Cairns hurting the other dog vs the other way around, so I wouldn't have even considered a dog smaller then them. I probably will never have 2 terriers at once again either, but I know a lot of Cairn folks that do. I just have decided that Collies and a terrier make a great melding of personalities.

I do have to admit, as the owner of two big dogs, and a self proclaimed "Big Dog Lover" I would one day love to have a Yorkie!!!!

Airedales, Black Russian Terriers and Border Terriers are my fave.

Only the Mini Schnauzer is considered a Terrier. That's not to say that the other 2 schnauzer breeds don't exhibit Terrier tendencies.

My favorite terrier is a miniature Pinscher.

I also like Dachshunds
Rat terriers
Pit bulls
and Boarder terriers

I'm not much of a terrier person, altho I do have a min- pin. I grew up with a yorkie and altho he was a great dog, I never want another yorkie.

I like all terriers in general with their cute face and lovely personality and Snowy, my dog is also a terrier (Parson Russell Terrier).

Look at this Norfolk Terrier, the Norwich Terrier with floppy ears - isn't he cute?

The only terriers I really like are:

-Staffordshire Bull Terrier
-American Staffordshire Terrier
-Coloured Bull Terrier
-APBT
-Border Terrier
-Smooth Fox Terrier
I also like some JRT's, but they're a bit too hyper for me usually lol.

There are soo many terriers to choose from. Although some don't think it's a true terrier, the Tibetan Terrier gets my vote.
I also like the Smooth Fox and the Patterdale. I don't really care for the smaller terriers like the Yorkie, Scottie, Rat Terrier, ext.

I don't really think of the bully and staffy breeds as terriers too often. I think of them more as mastiff type dogs or working breeds. tikeyas_mom- I like the Roman nose of the bull terrier too.
