Orijen food - does it look ok to you?

I am going to switch Tango to a new food as she isn't doing as well on her current food as I had hoped she would. I was going to switch yo EVO, but don't want to pay $70 for a 30lb bag if I don't have to(yes, that is the cheapest I could find it for after calling around). A while back I saw a food called Orijen at the petstore we always go to, and it looks almost as good as EVO, but is more in my price range. It looks good to me, but a few of you seem to know more about kibble than I do, so I thought I'd ask if there is anything in it that I should look out for/be concerned about.

So, what do you guys think? Is there anything that I should be concerned about? I just want to find something that will be good for her, and something that she'll hopefully do well on until I can reintroduce/switch her to raw (hopefully) this summer, permanently.

And just because most food threads seem to turn into something awful lately, please try not to do that to this one. I'd just like to know whether it's worth buying, or if I should look at something else. The only reason I'm asking about it is because it seems to be a relatively new food and not very well known.

I am not a food expert, but i think it looks great. But once again, am no expert!;)

This food is EXCELLENT. It's the price that kills. The same company also makes Acana, another fabulous food, but a little cheaper than Orijen.

I feed my cats Orijen, and they do great on it! :)

Ingredients look nice - I'd feed it if the store I go to supplied it and I wasn't feeding TWO. :)

I've never heard of it, but it looks like a good food to me. I'm not by any means a dog food expert (we seem to have many of those on PT ;) ) but I would feed that to my dogs.

It's a Canadian made, so I'm not sure if it's available in the States or not.

It is primarily Canadian, but there is a few stores in the US that sell it here is the List

I absolutely LOVE Orijen! It is very similar to Innova EVO, but is more affordable. I was feeding it to my cats, but found out no pet store close to me carries it. I bought it at the pet store I used to go to when I lived in the other apartment. I am now back on Felidae, and it's staying that way. :D

The pet store out here DOES carry Orijen! DH had called them and they said they didn't carry it, but when he went there, they had it. The price went up $3.00, maybe because of the recalls?

I'm currently feeding Kizmit the Orijen puppy formula and he's doing great on it.

Oh and if you do switch to Orijen I've found that one of the cheapest places to get it in Calgary is Rascals. I've seen it at the chain stores and at Fairplay but if I remember correctly Rascals had it for at least a few dollars less, plus they do the buy ten bags get one free thing. Mind you I haven't checked out the prices in the stores in the south like tailblazers or paws so they might have it cheaper.

Havent heard of it either- only concern is chicken low ash- that means its low in bone meal- on the other hand- that means its organ meat- .. Looks good! ( you uh get the borzoimom seal of approval- for what it is worth.. lol.. )

When I learned that Menu Foods makes Wellness' canned foods, I decided to look for an alternative. Although Symba's diet consists primarily of dry kibble, and none of the Wellness dry food was implicated in the recall, I didn't want to contribute to the wealth of a company that does business with Menu Foods.

A friend of mine gave me a sample of Orijen's adult dog food to try - total success!! Symba went nuts for it, and so did the cat! I love that it's 100% grain-free and high in protein (40% compared to Wellness at 22%). I have read up on Orijen and some other foods and I think, in my uneducated opinion, it is a high quality food. My friend bought some for her Airedale and he loves it! The price is a little higher but her dog doesn't have to eat as much so it balances out. It has a high calorie count and a bit higher in fat than a lot of the dog foods I've looked at but if you have an active dog, I don't think it would matter too much. I've read some stuff about pet food, and one thing that interested me was that some companies make one formula for puppies and one for adults to make money but some of the puppy formulas cause the puppy to grow too fast. As a result, their bodies can't handle it and then you get problems like hip dysplasia. A pet store that I go to sometimes doesn't even sell puppy formulas and tells people to give your puppy 20% -30% of the adult formula than you would an adult dog. Some dog foods like Holistic Selects Chicken and Rice and Canidae for all Life Stages are foods for puppy and adult but you just feed less when they're adults. What I like about Orijen though is that it's Canadian and made in a small factory as opposed to a huge factory that makes a bunch of different foods made with cheaper ingredients.

The ingredients look great to me...I mean there are a lot of good brands out there ...Orijen's kibble seems more meatier, maybe a bit softer and the high protein content is very different than what I've seen in other foods. It's claim to fame is that dogs wouldn't naturally eat rice or barley or oatmeal and that most foods use it as cheap sources of protein. Get some samples and try it out. If Tango does well on it, then it's a good thing! But I think one of the things you have to look for is where it's made...in a huge factory or a small one....look what has happened to Menu foods....the ingredients in a lot of the 'holistic' dog foods are not too cheap; especially in Orijen because of the meat in it.

OK I feed it to my kitties, BUT -

It's now available right here in Cochrane.
It is made in Alberta (Fairplay told me). There is also a Tailblazers in the NW where the price is pretty good. Even if it's a buck more in Cochrane - I don't have to drive, so saves time and gas.

Started my cats on 1/2 Urinary tract and 1/2 Orijen - and Oscar, about 6 - 7, has many more kittenish and playful spurts! He has gone quite goofy. :D

I am a fan of this food for sure - raw in kibble form, no grains.

It's a great food. I buy the senior formula sometimes for my old dogs. The love it.

I feed all my dogs Acana kibble--made by the same company. Good food, good price, never had a dog refuse to eat it, even the fussy ones! I use the Performance formula, which is a little much for a non-working dog, but all their formulas are very good.

It's also made in a very small factory in Alberta, run by one family, all Canadian ingredients...no worries about it being recalled.

Catty: How's that mix working for your cats? I have to feed a urinary formula, but I'd love to mix in some Acana or Orjen for them if I could do it without messing Pete up!

I feed Orijen to two of my three dogs and I just love the food (so do they, they act like it's a treat whenever I give it to them :p). Unfortunately, the third doesn't like it at all, but next month they're coming out with Orijen 6 Fish, and she usually likes fish so I'm going to give it a shot and I'm really, really hoping she'll like it!

The fact that it's made by Champion Pet Foods here in Alberta was a huge seller for me and that's the reason I want to get all three of them on it; I feel completely comfortable feeding it.
