View Full Version : Mom, I don't want to stay here!

"Mom, I don't want to stay here." Those were the last words Hannah got out before the Vet Tech took her to "the back" of the Veterinary Clinic today.
The problem started yesterday with up-chucking breakfast and things went downhill pretty fast in that she couldn't even hold down any water and then refused to even try to drink. A quick trip to the vet yesterday and a couple shots and home with some pills too and some prescription canned food, but still wasn't able to hold down the little water she did drink early this morning, nor the pill, nor the spoonfull of food, and she is again refusing to take any water. So it was back to the vet where she got an x-ray (nothing unusual showed up) and blood tests (no results yet). She is now on an IV for hydration and will get another shot this afternoon and is to stay overnight. She is running a fever. Dr. says he doesn't want this to develop into pancreatitis. He said he'd call later this evening with any info.
Took me awhile to post this, and lucky for you because this is "the condensed version".

O my gosh! How scary! Did the vet give any clue as to what they think is causing the problem? Do they suspect something wrong with an organ (being that you mentioned pancreatis)? My cocker went through something like this when she was about 10 or 11 years old - didn't hold anything down for several days. We were very scared. It turned out that she had twisted her back funny and was in pain. Anti-inflammatories and painkillers for a few days, and then she was back to normal.
I'm praying that Hannah's problem is just as simple to fix!

Daisy sends her love to her best girlfriend Hannah and Perry too.

This was a heart wrenching topic to read. I can't believe that strong girl Hannah is sick. I know how hard this is Rachel, but remember that she is brave and she is a fighter. She won't let any sickness get the best of her. I can't wait until she can come home to you. I am so sorry she has to stay overnight. Hold Tucker close and we will all be praying for our sweet Hannah.

I just read my husband all these sweet, sweet messages. He was quite impressed with the dear friends we have here. Aly you are right about Hannah being a strong girl. I was just thinking how healthy she has been. No problems since she was spayed at six months. I am waiting now for the vet to call me as he promised he would tonight with an update. Jessica, his initial impression was it was some kind of virus or bacterial thing, you know like a doggy flu, but said we may never really know what it is, but the pancreatitis is something that may develop as a complication of the initial problem. That thing your cocker had could be a real possibility with Hannah because she does a lot of running and jumping for the Kong, but she does have a fever, so that still points to some kind of infection. Whatever it is I a glad I got her in there so fast because I know dehydration could have made everything so much worse.
Tucker has a new theme song, "I'm Mr. Lonely". He is like a lost soul without his big sister around.
Thanks to all of you. I'm holding up pretty good. Trying to think positive. Sure wish Dr. Sage would call though.

So sorry that Hannah is sick. Will keep her in my prayers. Hope you hear from the dr. tonight as its terrible waiting for the call.
Rachel I have been out all day but precious Hannah has been on my mind. I got home and went right on the computer to see how she was doing. I agree that it is best she stay overnight and get those fluids in. Also, the negative x-rays made me feel better too. No blockage as you had feared. Hope it is just a bug of some sort. Maybe she just ate something a little weird in the grass and it sort of caught up with her. I'm hoping you are doing OK too. I know how frightened you must be and poor little Tucker must be beside himself without the Princess of Pillows to pal around with. Please continue to keep us updated. Lots of prayers are going up!

Dr. Sage just called. He just took her for a walk himself (I'm impressed). Said she was interested in checking out a Ford Escort and wondered if anyone in our family had one. No, but knowing Hannah, she was looking for a ride home. He said she is doing about the same. Still has a fever but seems to be strong. Color is good. He still didn't have the results of the blood tests and he has kept her on IV all day and no thowing up or diarhea. The stool test was negative for any parasites. He thinks that she should spend another day and night there so they can start her out on water and food in the clinic. He is thinking about having us visit tomorrow but not sure whether that would be helpful for her or just upset her when we left without her again. I told him that I didn't want to put any pressure on him but did want him to realize she was the center of my life! He said he kind of had that impression.

Oh, Rachel, I know you are worried. I am too! We too have been gone the majority of the day, and I just came to check up and see how Hannah was doing. I'm so sorry she is having to spend the night, but it is so much better than the risk of her getting dehydrated while he figures this out.
Chin up mom, and just give lots of extra attention to Dad and Tucker, and let them take care of you! Be strong for Hannah. I just know she will be ok....and will be waiting for you to spoil her rotten when she returns to her house! :D
We love you and will say lots of prayers for Hannah tonight.

Rachel, I know how hard this is for you, I would be the same way, you know me, if it was Daisy. But all in all she is in a very good place where they can watch her to make sure everything is going well. It does sound like maybe some kind of virus she picked up.
You are right the girls are the center of our lives, believe me I know how you feel. I am so anxious to hear Hannah is well, you already know she is my favorite. We will keep up the positive thoughts and prayers for her.

Rachel,
I'm glad the Doc has gotten the vomiting &
diarhea under control. That is some progress!
One time Buddy snatched up and swallowed
some dead "something" from the yard before
I could say 'leave it'.(Not sure if it was a bird or mouse)He became very, very sick for
about a week.(projectile diarhea & vomiting). Never was that ill before or since. Bud was treated with antibiotics and
did improve, but still didn't eat for several
days afterward. It is so scary when our
furbabies feel SO bad and we can't make it
better sooner. Have you decided if you will
go visit Hannah tomorrow? Tough decision!!
Maybe you & your husband can go and just view
her from another room just to reassure
yourselves that Hannah is doing her part by
resting quitely and doesn't look scared.
Continued prayers for Hannah tonight!!!

Rachel, I guess your vet is still working on what's making Hannah so ill. On the slim chance that it turns into pancreatitis, don't despair. Our sheltie, Danny, first got pancreatitis years ago (he's 15 now). It made him very sick on the 3 occasions he's had it severely, but it has proven to be very manageable with diet. He's stayed well for a long time now.

Dr. Sage called this morning. He gave me the good news first, her temperature has dropped a degree and she still has good color and alertness. Then he dropped the bomb, her liver enzymes are highly elevated...ALT and AST and an elevated bilirubin. Her white blood cell counts are elevated. I asked him how high the liver enzymes were, and he said not to panic but they were greater than 2000. Then he went on to say this cause could be the bacterial infection could be in her blood stream or a chronic active hepitisis or a problem that cocker spaniels get which has something to do with copper metabolism. He has added another antibiotic and he is going to try to give her some water today to see how she handles it. As far as visiting goes, we could, but he thought is might be stressful for her when we left so he advised against it. The next thing he wants to do is an ultra sound of the liver. He will call to let me know how she does today. I guess part of obtaining an diagnosis is going to be how she responds over the next couple days. Needless to say, I am just numb. Thank you all for your messages. They mean the world to me. Love your sweet fur babies and don't put off doing something special for them, a walk...some time playing ball...whatever.

Rachel,
I couldn't get home from church quickly enough to see if you had posted a message. Bless your heart, I know you are worried. I know nothing about any of the symptoms you have discussed, but I'm sure some of our "liver" experts, Sandra, Sue, etc. will be able to chime in and give you some solid understanding of what is happening.
Hang in there. Know that all paws (and that's a lot) are crossed, and Helen and I will continue to hold Hannah up in our prayers. :)
We love you.
Logan
Rachel thank you for keeping us up to date. I know this waiting is so hard for you and maybe just being able to post and "talk about it" and keep us up to date is helping pass the time. I, like Logan, was in a bit of a hurry to get home from church today and have been checking Pet Talk and waiting for some word. I know how upset I feel and can't even begin to imagine what you are feeling right now. Being separated from Hannah for a period of days (as it looks now) is awful enough in itself but to know your sweetie is not feeling well and the blood work has not come back as we had wished is, I am sure, making this separation intolerable. I wish I lived closer so I could give you a great big hug. I am counting on hubby to do that for me. Please feel free to come to this board even if only to share concerns, ask for prayers, whatever! We are here for you Rachel and sweet little Hannah. We love you both!

Rachel, I'm am so sorry to here that Hannah's problems may be more complicated than expected. The bright light is that she is with a vet who obviously cares about her and will do everything he can to alleviate the problem!
I will pray that further testing finds an easy-to-cure problem, and that she is perfectly healthy and back in your arms within a couple of days!

Oh, Hannah-banana, you gotta be scared
But you're only in the whitecoat's house
Because your Momma cared
Now, we know you're feeling poorly, kid,
And home seems far away
But we're sending our our thoughts and prayers
To help you get better and better each day.
Oh, Hannah-banana, be brave and strong
Be a good girl, baby,
And you'll be home before long
Momma misses you, and your fur-friends too, are sad
But try to get better, don't bite the white-coats
And when you're back and bouncy, we'll all (even Tucker) be glad!

Waiting is so difficult, especially while a loved one is ill. Lots of prayers and healthy hugs for you and Hannah! It sounds like there are still so many possibilities for what is making her sick, it must be very frustrating!
Keep hopeful, and remember, everything seems worse at night - so tonight try to distract yourself a bit, and get some rest. A few hours can make a big, positive difference, especially since Hannah's got energy and strength to face this trouble.
We'll keep your whole family in our prayers, and your medical team too. What a blessing to have a doctor that is concerned and cares about Hannah. Keep fighting, Hannah! We hope to see you home soon!

I'm going to print out all these wonderful messages so I can read them all to Hannah when she gets home. Each and every one of them makes a BIG difference. I went back to Sue's original post on Killian to try to get more familiar with some aspects about elevated liver enzymes, etc. but it was too upsetting right now. I'm kind of in a denial mode, still hoping that she'll get over this with the antibiotics and that could happen, otherwise he wouldn't be giving them. Her vet does seem to be very caring. He is a young guy who just joined the practice, but there are two other vets there with whom he can consult. When he calls tonight, I'm going to ask if he will fax me a copy of the lab report. Not that I will know what everything means, but at least I will have the specifics for future reference should I need it. I just hope she can keep the water down today, so she can come home. I miss her so much but I feel better knowing she is where she can get what help is available to her. This is going to cost a bundle, but there is nothing I would rather spend my money on than the well being of my dogs and now is when she needs it so now is when she will get it. It is so amazing how I knew immediately that she really sick, not just an ordinary upchuck. She communicated it to me so clearly and unequivocally. I saw it in her eyes. I really think she understands that why she is where she is too. My girl is a real smartee pup and, Bridget, you are right, she is one tough cookie. She will not give up.

Rachel, I'm so sorry that the good news was followed by the scary sounding lab results. I know how your stomach must have sunk. But with such acute infections, those blood values really do soar quickly. I know the number sounds very scary. But also remember, the normal range does not start with "0" And we have to remember that she has been dealing with a very nasty infection, and everything gets out of wack very quickly with such an acute condition. The good thing is that her fever is subsiding, she seems pretty peppy, and hopefully she can keep some fluids down and perhaps a little food. And Rachel, the blood was drawn stat when you brought her in the first day. Her fever was higher and she was feeling very ill. I'll bet if they did repeat blood work today, they would see her elevated levels dropping. Rachel, we all know that nothing we say right now is going to cheer you up. We all have been where you are. And we all know how understandably numb and totally helpless you are feeling. And especially, how much you must miss her. That's the worst part. But hold onto the thought that she is getting great care from a vet who seems to care a great deal for both you and Hannah, and will take excellent care of her in your absence. The ultrasound will give him a lot more info. Try not to speculate on what the cause might be. It could be any of a number of things. Till, then, try and hang in there. And hang on to us and your family and the sweet Tucker man, and the "collar!" ;) With the prayer and love machines (as Phred would say)
cranked up REAL high, Hannah just has to get better. We all love her, and you, very much. Love, Sandra

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!! I am really worried!!!! Those ALTs are quite elevated. However, with an infection, they do elevate. I am hoping that this is the case here. If so, they will drop after the infection is gone. The liver can recover. I can't believe that this is happening to poor Hannah. Right now, Hannah is where she needs to be, in the doggie hospital. Oh, I am so worried for you. We can't speculate til the infection is gone. Hopefully, that is the cause. I am really praying hard for you, Hannah and Rachel, too. This is so scary for you. I know what you are feeling. Be sure to ask the vet what to look for in any other symptoms. I can't say enough how much I am praying for Hannah's quick recovery. Please let me know if you have any questions about what I now know about liver disease. Keep us posted on dear Hannah. Hang in there. (I know how scary it is!) I am praying hard!

I spoke to the vet again tonight and he essentially said what Sue just said above.
Otherwise there is no new information. She is holding her own, still has her independent attitude, wanting to take the vet where she wants to go when he takes her outside. She also has him wrapped around her little paw already as he mentioned what a dear dog she is and a wonderful patient.
She wasn't interested in taking any water but he felt that might be because she is being hydrated through the IV. Tomorrow he is going to offer her some food to see what happens. Possibly she might come home tomorrow afternoon if she keeps the food down, or stay another day and do the ultra sound. At least I think that's what he said. My mind grasps what he tells me, but then after I hang up, everything kind of runs together.

Rachel, I am sorry I don't know more about these symptoms. I feel very reassured by Sandra and Sue's posts though. If you can't take her home tomorrow, maybe one of your friends who Hannah doesn't really know could go check on her? That way she might not get upset when they leave, and they can reassure you that your girl is okay. Of course, I am praying you will be able to pick her up tomorrow though.
Keep your food down sweet Hannah. Tucker and your humans need you.

Bacterial infection...
I don't know why I didn't think of this earlier...this sounds exactly like what Tinker-kat had. Two rounds of antibiotic and she was good as gold! Hope it's that way for Miss Hannah!
Sweetie Tucker, keep that spaniel head of yours held high, bud! Your mommy needs you most right now!
{{hugs all the way around}}
Rachel I have all of my fingers and toes crossed that little Hannah will eat today and be able to keep it down. What a happy thought that she might be able to come home. I know exactly what you mean when you say that what the vet says makes sense on the phone and after you get off it sort of jumbles. The words he says are so reassuring and you want to play them over in your mind exactly as you heard them because there is comfort in them but are unable to and then fear sets in again. Try to focus on the good things he is telling you and take one day at a time. Easier said than done I know! For now just smother that little Tucker guy with lots of kisses and hugs (which I know you are doing) because it will make BOTH of you feel so much better. Bella and I send you hugs and wish there was more we could do.
Rachel, I feel so bad for having missed this post - still no computer access over the weekend. I hope that sweet Hannah is feeling better. We are all thinking of her over here. I pray that you will have good news today and that you will be able to take her home soon. Rachel take care of yourself I know you must be really worried. Tucker, be brave for your mom and a huge kiss to Hannah.
Just checking in on Hannah before I go to school. I really hope she's held down food and/or water. I want to see the pretty girl go home.

Rachel, Hannah is the first thing on my mind this morning, I am so worried about her, but it sounds like things are looking up. I just know how hard it is for you to be away from her. Many people consider dogs just dogs but we know better, Hannah and Daisy are the light of our lives. As Bridget says Hannah is a tough cookie and she will be o.k. I love the fact that Hannah decides where she and the Vet will walk. That's our Hannah all right. Hopefully she will get to come home today and continue to get well. Dr. Sage just called. Hannah did eat about three tablespoons of a special food this morning and drank some water (around 8:00 am) and so far has not thrown it up. Her temperature is down to 102. If she can keep the food down, he will not do the ultra sound and she can come home tomorrow and then he would recheck the liver enzymes in about a week. He did say her heart rate was a little slow, but that might be because she was relaxed.

OMG Rachel!!! I feel like a complete jerk! I did not even check "dog health" until just now and I can't believe what I found! With the forum that was on its second page I was terrified to open it up :( I am so sorry about my favorite cockapoo girlie and Graham's fantasy girlie friend :( Poor, dear little Hannah. That little girlie is the sweetest most cuddly and loving little gal and I am devistated to hear that she is sick. I am absolutely devistated. Please forgive me for not posting sooner. I should make it a habbit of checking "dog health" before anything else because I hate to miss out on the well wishes for my friends, especially when I have had the pleasure of meeting with them in person.
Rachel, please know that I am sorry to hear that you have to go through this. I am heartbroken and I feel terrible for both you, Hannah, and of course Mr. Lonely Tucker. What a scary thing :(
Hannah, Tucker & Rachel you are in my prayers and I love you all. Please, Hannah, get better and make sure you come home today. Your family needs you.

Rachel, I'm glad that Hannah held down a little food this morning and her temperature is better. Hopefully she will not need that ultrasound. I pray that those enzyme levels go down and she is well. Believe me, my prayers are with you!! What an ordeal to go through. I hope she comes home soon. When she does, give her a big hug from us! We will be thinking about her and you, too, all day!

Thank goodness for the news that sweet girl Hannah has taken a little food and water well. And her temp. going down a bit more...a little good news. I hope she can come home asap. I know all that special love you want to heap upon her will help her heal even more quickly. Try and be strong Mom. I know being without her is so very hard; for you and the Tucker Man. What a brave little boy he's being too. Give him a big hug for me. And if you get to see Hannah today, please give her a kiss from all of us, her cyber aunties and tell her we can't wait till she is home again. We love you guys. Sandra

Rachel, we are leaving in the morning for a little mini vacation in Palm Springs. I just wanted to tell you that Hannah will be in my thoughts and prayers while I'm gone. I keep checking back here all the time waiting for the time you say well, she is coming home. It does sound a lot better, especially if she is keeping down some water and a little food. We are taking our laptop with us and if we can figure out how to hook it up there I will try to see how she is doing.(Don't have our Grandson this time to help with the computer) Please give her a hug and kiss from us and of course one for Tucker too.
Take care.

Even though some scary and terrible things can happen to our pets, don't forget that most times they CAN conquer an illness with our help. Their bodies and their spirits can be so strong! And with love and prayers and good medical help, our fur babies do come home to us!
Hugs and healthy wishes from Pam, Winston and Murf ( who spent a week being very sick :( and has had 4 happy healthy years since then :) )

PET TALKERS' PRAYERS ARE ANSWERED.
I just talked with Dr. Sage and Hannah gets to come home tomorrow morning!!!!!! http://plauder-smilies.com/party/dance2.gif She kept all her food and water down today, and he said she is "very active". She'll have to take 2 different pills and eat a prescription canned food for a while and then go back to get another blood test in a week or so. But she is coming home!!!! I know it was the prayers and special concern that everyone here has shown for my sweetheart that brought her through this crisis. I want to thank each and every one of you who posted or said a prayer or wished her well.

She is here, she is home! And she is in great shape. I expected maybe a little weak in the knees or subdued, but she is her old self. At the clinic I met her in a consultation room and then we went out to the front area where we had to wait until they had the bill printed up. My boss (who took me to pick her up) sat with her on a bench about 5 feet from where I was standing at the counter. She looked at me and cried and whined the whole time as if she couldn't stand to be that far away from me. She is now sitting on the chair in my office. I guess she did miss me. At home I fed her a third of a can of her special prescription food and let her out in the back yard where she made lots of stinkies. What a beautiful sight to see all systems working again, even if I had to do some butt wiping. She has two different pills to finish up with, and then another blood test to recheck the liver enzymes. But based on what I see today, I truly believe she is going to be just fine. (Tucker is one happy little boy to have her back!)

Yup, it's me, Hannah, and I am home and I slept in the Big Bed last night and mom said I can paw out a big THANK YOU to my special friends here who sent me GET WELL wishes and done crossed your paws to pray that I would feel better so I could come home. So I am sending you sweet Hannah kissies..lots of them because I love you all. Here is a picture of me and Tucker which Mom took when I first got home. Don't I look pathetic? I learned how to do that from Reece. That yellow bandage is where I had my IV. I love you all sooo much. http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=167892&a=13853686&p=55038940

DeaR Hannah,
Reece here. I just HAD to tell you that you perfected that look because my mommy's heart melted when she saw it. So I'm sure your mommy's does too and she's spoilin you pretty much, ain't she?!?!!? Hehe, look, even Tucker fell for it! Jus whenever you want something, put on that look and everyone will give you what you want! It works with everyone except good ol Lolly. She's my big sis though so she's da boss!
We are so glad you're feeling better. Never done so much paw crossing as we did while you were at the vet. Sometimes I act all scared like and shake when I'm at the vet so maybee we can leave earlier. That one usually doesn't work though. I wonder if any four legger here has advice on how to get out of that mess
Well, WELCOME HOME HANNAH!!!! WE LOVE YOU!

Bella here! Hannah I am so happy to see you are home!!! And just look at Tucker falling all over himself to get a smell of you to try and find out where you have been! :D Hannah, whatever you do don't let your mom take off that bandage until it is absolutely impossible to stop her. When I got the heartworm test they bandaged me and my dad just melted when he saw my boo-boo! It will also remind your mom of what you have been through and may be good for cancelling out a NAWTEE dog act or two. Ya never know! :D Anyways, I have just been so upset knowin' you weren't home and all and have been makin' my mom check these boards alla time! I am so glad you are home and OK and please take care of yourself, Hannah Princess of Pillows! I haven't learned half of what you have to teach me yet! Love and Wags, Your Pal Bella

Miss Thing is in rare form. It is hard to believe she was ever sick. As I write, she is bouncing her Kong on the floor waiting for me to get off work. (0kay, well maybe this isn't exactly work!) She is back on her regular food, has finished taking her Flagyl prescription and has until Friday morning to finish her other antibiotic. This weekend while I was cleaning, I did find one of her pills on the floor which she had obviously spit out. When she first came home we sort of had the Battle of the Wills and Pills. However, ever since I started putting them in a little cheddar cheese ball, she has consented to take them. I need to make an appointment to take her back for another blood test; although I really am not concerned at this point.
Miss Hannah would like to thank you all so much for caring. She has recovered; however, I still stop every time I pass her and smoother her with kisses and tell her how much I love her. So it may take me a little while longer to get back to *normal*.

Now I know that you are supposed to take all those pills Hannah but I was just so proud that you sorta maintained your spunk even when you was feeling so bad. I bet your mom probably was smilin' too when she found that pill 'cause she knew you were too smart to fall for the old cheddar cheese ball trick for too long! Oh and Hannah good luck with your next blood test. I am hoping all will be just fine and of course you'll be smothered with kisses and get another really neat bandage to wear afterwards. You stay well and never give us a scare like that again, OK? Oh, Graham says Hi...he liked your picture. He thinks you looked not a day over 6 months old in that picture :) Oh...he also said hi to his Tucker buddy.
On the topic of spitting pills out, my vet mentioned something to me yesterday. There's a contraption you can get from the vet that will shoot the pill to the back of the tongue. I am not sure on the price or how well it works but it may be helpful for some people. I just put the dogs' pills in cheese and they disappear :)

Cheese used to work, but then he just ate that and "pattooeed" the pill across the room (snicker, snicker)so now I just rely on liverwurst ("Come! Liverwurst! Come"!)or a new thing..peanut butter!! Thanks for asking Sue. She is her rambunctious self. She was fit enough to reach up on the kitchen table this weekend and get a new (large size) pack of sugarless gum I had just bought and consume it all (wrappers included). I almost didn't know it but she left half the outer wrapper and a couple pieces on the living room rug. I called the emergency vet and they said they didn't think it would create a problem. Sure enough, next day her poopies had lots of shiney aluminum foil bits in them. This also confirmed that is was her and not Tucker. Another crisis averted.
