Sherman the Short-Hair Cavy, the Pet of the Day
Name: Sherman
Age: Unknown
Gender: Male
Kind: Short-Hair Cavy (Guinea Pig)
Home: Illinois, USA

We adopted this adorable adult male Guinea Pig, Sherman (age unknown), from the Humane Society on Nov. 25, 2018. He and his brother were dumped there weeks earlier. His brother was adopted without Shermy (so sad). Then, later, Sherman (a.k.a. Shermy or Champ) was adopted but returned two weeks later (outrageous). Shermy was the oldest GP at the H.S. and had been there the longest when we saw him on the PetFinder site and we knew he was just waiting for us! The staff told us he was skittish, and he was trembling when I first held him at the H.S., but he had been through a lot of traumatic changes and emotional upheavals (poor baby). We couldn't wait to take him to his forever home and let him begin his new, carefree life!

We don't think Shermy had veggies/fruit at his previous homes but he quickly learned to enjoy a variety of them (his favorites are shredded carrots, radicchio and apple). Fortunately, he LOVES Oxbow's Vitamin C tablets (broken into small pieces) and Oxbow hay/pellets/Simple Rewards Timothy Treats. Shermy's #1 favorite treats are Rice Pops (small animal treat made by Ware). His great nutrition and vitamin C daily has transformed him into a very energetic, playful scamp with happy spurts of running around at lightning speed every day. And, he has gained 7 ounces since we adopted him!

Sherman has excellent eyesight and hearing. He watches/listens to everything and doesn't want to miss out on anything!

Every morning, Sherman comes out of his igloo, sloowwwly s-t-r-e-t-c-h-i-n-g, looking like a Slinky or a ferret! He greets each day happily, stands on his hind legs making himself as tall as he can and I give him a kiss on his cute nose before he enjoys a yummy breakfast.

Shermy likes to throw his toys around and move them all over when we're not around. He often hides a "midnight snack" or a toy in his igloo (too cute) and I'll put them right back where he had them after I clean his cage daily.

Sherman is a precious boy, enjoys receiving hugs/kisses and often "melts" at my neck purring when I pick him up for a cuddle. However, at times, he can't spare the time for "mush" (LOL) because he is too energetic and wants to play, eat, explore and I respect that. (By the way, he usually doesn't want to sit still for long when it's time for holiday portraits so it's a very comical situation!)

We nicknamed Sherman "The Champ" because he has been through many very stressful changes in his life but has bounced back and still has a trusting, loving soul.

As you can see, Shermy is a treasure and adds a lot of joy to our household daily. We are very lucky to have him in our family!

We have adopted many adult/senior guinea pigs from the Humane Society over the past 30+ years (we are not breeders) and we encourage everyone to adopt homeless pets (big or small) because they all deserve love/care/respect, no matter what their age, size or pedigree. We invite everyone to check out our adopted pets' fun photo site: www.guineapigsrfun.net . Our web site's motto is, "We never met a cavy we didn't love" and that's the truth!
