Let
me introduce Filippo! He is a standard gray male chinchilla about
eight months old. He is a little adorable chubby thing. I guess he is
not a common chin because he does something we call "hand dance".
There are some people hands with whom he has immediate feeling. (My
sister's hand is one of his favorites). Perhaps he is attracted by the
smell and when he gets in touch with these persons when they approach
him, he suddenly assumes a round form like a ball of fur, starting to
go backward and forward with small steps and rotating on himself while
staying on the hand. Meanwhile he puts his nose between the fingers
and pushes with his muzzle. Sometimes he bites softly while dancing.
Then he stops and restarts the same dance. He behaves this way for a
long time. I wrote about this behavior in a chinchilla forum but
nobody had ever heard or seen something like the hand dance. Perhaps
this is a sexual or mating communication with people he will be in
love with but I haven't find any sign or hint in the books I read about
breeding a chinchilla. This makes my beloved Filippo very special to
us!
