Chemie, the Pet of the Day
Name: Chemie
Age: Two years old
Gender: Female
Kind: Chocolate Labrador Retriever
Home: Freeport, Pennsylvania, USA

Approximately three years ago I purchased a house with the lifelong dream of owning a dog. I bought a black Labrador Retriever puppy which I named Shadow. At the time I was teaching Chemistry at Freeport Senior High in Freeport, PA, and I had a class comprised of 17 sophomore girls. One day I went downstairs to wash a load of clothes and I forgot to close the door behind me. As Shadow tried to follow me, she fell down the stairs and shattered both of her hips. I took her to the vet who advised me to put her to sleep because the damage was too extensive to repair. When I told my Chemistry class that I had Shadow put to sleep they were most distressed and refused to speak to me that day (talk about a tough lecture). The next day they apologized because they could see how upset I was over the whole affair. Nothing else was said.

Two months later, the kids said that they had a surprise for me. They handed me a bookbag and when I unzipped it... an adorable eight-week old Chocolate Lab puppy came out! The class had passed a hat and bought me the puppy! I was so touched a tear came to my eye. I have never had a class of students do something so nice for me (and will probably never receive such a nice gift from the heart). Needless to say, the dog and the group of students now occupy a very special place in my heart. They named the dog Chemie, which is Chemistry in French. Chemie has become my best friend and is as wonderful a dog as I could possibly have hoped. She is loyal, obedient, affectionate and fun-loving, not to mention totally spoiled! I even brought her into school one year later so that she could spend the day with the class that bought her, to see how wonderful she really is! They simply adored her! My thanks go out to that special group of kids who made all the fun times with Chemie possible. I'll never forget them!
