I wonder if anyone on the list has experience of Maine Coon acts?

My mother likes the look of them and is thinking of perhaps getting one when she retires (likely to be a few years off yet!).

The problem is she also has a large dog (collie/labrador cross) and I wondered if the cat would be able to deal with this? I have a friend with Havana cats which are very highly strung and wouldn't be able to cope with a dog in the home...

This probably seems like a dumb question but I only have experience of moggies so don't feel able to advise my mother on this!

Thanks in advance

My Livvy is a Maine Coon mix and prior to living with me lived in a home with a chow mix -- I think he was roughly 80 pounds (~36 kg??? -- sorry, I'm not good with conversions) and Livvy and Kimo got along quite well. (Usual introduction issues between cat and dog of course...) I'm almost positive that Sandra/Tatsxxx11's Oliver is a Maine Coon also -- you might see if she has comments on MC cat and dog introductions.

For what it's worth, I'd recommend that your mother go for a MC! They are adorable. ;)

Our Jackson is Maine Coon. He is so calm and layed back. Since we got him, 4 dogs have been added to our house hold, along with 6 cats, 3 of those cats are still with us.

http://members.aol.com/fuzzy317/images/jack1.jpg

Our biggest dog, Eli, is about 80-90 pounds, and they get along well. Jackson is the "alpha" in our house, so he may rarely hiss at another pet, but he doesn't swat at them and has never gotten in a fight with any of them.

My fiancee has had cats pretty much her entire adult life, with her being a humane society half-way house for a time. She says that our Jackson is the best cat she has ever had.

Every suspected Maine Coon I have known has been pretty good with dogs, bar one, but even Pippin eventually forgave my brother - the first of the three cats to do so - for bringing home that jumpy shiny monster thingy (a Lab/Dalmatian? shelter pup who was I think 9 months old at the time), and the only one of the cats to play with the puppy! Pippin is a little, um - skittish - of new things. Were there not copious quantities of yellow fur on the couch, and many pictures/stories, I would never know for sure that he existed!

These Cooners are a hunka, hunka cat and would probably hold their own - I don't think I'd worry about the dog;) On second thought maybe I would worry about the dog - getting beat up by the cat that is:D :D :D

Speaking as one who has always been ruled by doggies and kitties occupying the same turf.....I think this can work!!! I have a Maine Coon mix, and a DLH that share the couch happily each and every night with a Lab and a Husky/Shep!!! Both BIG dogs!! Not only does my Maine Coon kitty love the dogs and follow them everywhere, I think he thinks he IS a dog!! He is their constant companion. Nothing phases Oliver!

Maine Coons are known for having very sweet, loving, playful temperments. Mellow and laid back!! I have a friend who breeds them, and they are all so gentle and affectionate! They are wonderful felines! And so beautiful:)

Of course, there is no telling how the dog/cat "mix" will get along. But, generally speaking, it is the dog who usually ends up "making way" for the cat! There might be one "altercation." This brief showdown usually finds the kitty decalared the "winner!" after one quick swat to the nose:D From there on, the dog seems to go out of her/his way to show respect to the cat. At worst, they ignore each other. My cats and dogs have always become great friends. I think the fact that the dog is "big" is of minor import. Your Mom and you are the best judge of the doggie's personality. I would be most concerned if the dog has in the past shown a strong "prey" drive. Sometimes dogs view cats as prey, as they scamper about. If your Mom gets a kitten, I think the adjustment would be a little easier for the kitty. Kitten are usually fearless! And cats that "grow up" with dogs usually come to love them and enjoy their company! Gradual, supervised introduction is the way to go! Good Luck!

Misty is a mix Maine Coon. She is a very independent cat. She will only be held when she wants to be. Very playful and loves her toys. She is very smart. She is the only Maine Coon I have ever had so I don't know if their all like her or not. She has a great personality.

This is a picture of Lamoni when he was very young. He weighs over 20 pounds now and is a furry ball with legs.

Cooners can be porkers! Be careful how much you feed them.

Very gentle cats and oh so soft.

i have a Maine Coon mix and she's a sweetheart. She also lives with a doggy who's smaller than she is (Yorkshire Terrier who weighs 5-1/2 lbs) and they get along great. They play together all the time Shana weighs about 11 lbs. and is very gentle with Tiffany.

I have a Maine Coon Cattery: http://mainecoons.org/colecoons/poems/index.shtml

I have a group about Maine Coons: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/colecoonmccats/

My advise to anyone who is interested in any breed is to surf the WWW and visit every web-site you possibly can. There are many different looks to Maine Coons and you have to find the look that really makes your heart go pitter patter!

My MCs are from the old lines and are very shaggy coated! They are average sized. Have wonderful temperaments. We had a darling litter on 12/15/01 and they are all in their new homes. 2 littermates went together to a show home close by! They have 2 dogs husky/beagle mix. They have become Lovey and Mac's -the MC kittens' best friends!

Maine Coons are Puppy-cats! They play fetch and do tricks! They are very loyal and devoted to their PURRsons! They chirp and sing instead of meowing! Although they aren't considered to be lap cats all of mine are!

I would be very happy to answer any questions any should have about this great breed. I also have 4 domestic cats too, 2-DSH and 2DLH! Love those Moggies!!!

Feel free to email me... visit our site... join our group!

I just visited you site... I have a problem to decide whether to have a orange Maine coon or silver/grey... It's just that they all look so gorgeous! Luckily it will take some years before we can take more cats, so I have time to decide. I've read a lot about Maine coons lately, and they sound wonderful cats! I have to do more reading though, concerning taking care of their fur. Do they need a lot of brushing etc? Does any one know? It's not a problem if they do, that's not why I asked ;)
Back to reading now :D

My feeling is....cats is cats. It depends on the individual cat, more than the breed, how well they get along with dogs. And, of course, a lot depends on the dog. Sweet big dogs are often wonderful with kittens...and allow themselves to be terrorized by them.

Hi Casper and Kitty!

Maine Coons are definitely a difFURent breed of cats! I have a friend who has 18 cats and 2 of them are MCs... They have a PURRsonality all their own.

They are clowns, the chirp instead of purr, they are friendly -may or may not be lap cats, they have long fur but only need to be groomed once a week a good combing through the longer hair as their hair is shaggy... not all one length. I have 4 Maine Coons... 2 DLHs who look like they are part Maine Coon and 2 DSHs who I also adore...

A FURRY good place to learn more is my YAHOO group: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/colecoonmccats/

Our website also is a neat plae to see our cats and read my mushy love poems to them...
http://mainecoons.org/colecoons/meet.shtml

I am FURRY willing to be a resource to anyone who is interested in the Maine Coon breed. I've done some showing and we had one litter back in December!

I'd love to be able to attach photos to these posts... for all to see... I've tried to attach photos and it doesn't work...

PURRhaps you 2 FURRY smart talented kitties could help me out! Thanks FUR starting the Maine Coon Thread!

Sounds like he's just a runt compared to some of these kitties. :) And Peanut definitely has some MC in her, but she is a real shrimpy at about 8 pounds. She's a little sweetie though.

Casper & Kitty,
that picture of Pride and Joy is incredible! Those are great names too!

I have one pure Maine Coon (Wylie, orange, just over a year now), and a M. Coon/Himilayen mix (Kedi, cream, almost 8 yrs. now).
We also have a dog (Scout, 3 yrs., Border Collie/Blk. Lab mix).
The cats and dog get along really well. In fact, Wylie and Scout are 'buddies'- they play together, sleep together sometimes, and get into mischief together.
We call them "Mutt & Jeff" :D

Both my cats like to play fetch and Wylie will follow me around the house like a dog.

The only problem we had was when we brought the dog home last summer, she had quite a high prey instinct.
We had to introduce her to the cats very slowly- it took about 2 months before we could really trust her with them. Scout spent quite a bit of time on a leash around the house!
Now, she and Wylie play 'chase' games with each other! It's very cute! Sometimes all three of them are laying on the bed at the same time, taking a little snooze
I wish I had seen this post earlier............

All these beautiful pictures of Maine Coons are making me want a kitten!!!!! :( Someday....
I have wanted a Maine Coon since the first time I laid eyes on one. About 10 years ago, I was browsing through an antique store and looked down and there was this GIGANTIC cat!!!!! He was so big I could hardly believe my eyes!!! I watned to take him home with me right then and there and if they had let me I would have!! His name was Bud. The owner of the store wasnt' there but apparently it was his cat and he breeds them. I used to stop in to see Bud but haven't been in a few years....

IF I ever do get a cat though, I'll have to adopt since I just can't see buying one with all the homeless ones....So if I ever have one, it will be pure luck...I love everything about them, their size, their fluffy fur, their distinct face shape.....They are beautiful....Let's see more pics!!

My youngest of six sweet kitties is a Maine Coon. I adore him. He has the best personality. Gentle and as I've heard them called Gentle Giants. He was left on my doorstep one night when he was nine weeks old. I'd never had one before but was so glad that I took him in. His name is Shadow and he dearly loves my three dogs! All my six cats get along with the dogs. I have two large dogs and onw medium one. A Rottweiler A Flat Coat Retriever (part) and the last is a part Russell Terrier. I have never had a cat that didn't get along with my dogs. I had my dogs when I got the Maine Coon. I love all the pictures of the Maine Coons that you've share on Pet talk. I don't have a scanner to show you mine but someday soon I will show you all of my babies.

You know folks, after reading about the size and personalities of the Maine Coons, I am beginning to wonder if Silver Prince isn't also an MC! The reasons I say this is that he is only 2 months old and is nearly as big as his mom, and weighs 3 lbs. It appears to me that this is quite large for a 2 month old kitten. Also, that his personality is very gentle and not demanding. He is all blue, with a Maine Coon type of face, (like Pride) as referenced with other M C kitten pictures. 'Just wondering.

(later) Silver Prince's size and that of his two lettermates, both females, would account for their mom (Fluffy) only having 3 kittens, because of they are so big. I noticed when they were born, they seemed a bit large. But I thought it was because of the limited number she had this year. ( Fluffy was spayed not too long after their birth). It did not enter my mind that they could possibly be Maine Coon cats.

Wayne, he might very well be a MC, or an MC mix

Do you have pictures to post? I would like to see him!

Yorkster, no I do not have facilities to present pictures over the internet at the moment. However, I'm looking over some digital cameras now, and will soon buy one. I have so many pictures to take of my furkids that I'm afraid I would take up an entire column of thread! And for a logo, it is not known whether I can get all of them in the designated space. Be patient, they will be coming.:)

I have been over several sites now with Maine Coon cats on them, but I have not found one example of an all blue kitten. Silver Prince has no other colors on him and no tabby markings, which otherwise, is common with practically every MC on the 'net. His nose leather is blue but all of his paw pads are that type of magenta color.

If Silver Prince is a maine coon, that I will make me very happy. It will be the first time in almost 26 years that I have had a Maine Coon., and the the first time I have raised one from a kitten. Also, that I am going to scan the internet for blue Maine Coons and perhaps come up with a picture that looks like him.;)

Hi again Wayne. I actually know someone with a solid gray/blue MC named Smokey.
From what I have read, MC's can come in any color/colors, markings, etc. EXCEPT for points (like Siamese, etc.)
The reason for this is they are what is considered a 'natural' purebred, in that they are bred for their size and personality only, and not to specific colors & markings. Anything that can occur in nature color-wise, is normal on a MC.
Solid colors are still more unusual though, so solid gray or blue won't be seen as often.
My MC Wylie, is white and orange (no tabby stripes). He has a solid white brother who has blue eyes. The guy I know with the solid blue MC, also has a sloid black MC.
:)

Yorkster, thanks so much for the M C coloration and breed standards information. Both of your Maine Coons sound very pretty, and I am partial to white cats anyway. I was beginning to think that my Prince is somewhat uncommon, because of the defeciency of examples of all one-color Maine Coons.

Yesterday I got him to lay beside me on the pillow, that is kept next to the keyboard. This morning after feeding, he came and layed on it of his own accord, next to his littermate, Tiara. Now, I'm beginning to wonder now if both of his littermates, Pepper and Tiara(both torties), although both are females, are not also Maine Coons, because they are somewhat larger than the other cats of similiar ages Now Prince is beginning to play "chase and wrestle", which is a game for older cats, and not so adapted for a 2-month old. Also, I looked over the show requirements for Maine Coons on the internet, (I believe it was the American Cat Fanciers Assoc.) Silver Prince fit all categories for a show cat except the color of his paw pads. They said that his pads should also be gray like his nose leather. However, they are megenta in color, not quite a lavender and not a pink, but a darker combination of the two. :)

Yorkster, Silver Prince is going to be a LARGE cat. When I weighed him the other day he was 2 lbs, and about 14 oz. Now he is 3lbs and 4 oz. Also, because he is sleeping next to the keyboard this morning, I took the time to measure his length. Appx. 19" from nose to tail-end. Some 2 month old kitty! It looks like the growth expectation will be the same as what you predicted. -2 lbs per month:eek: This morning he is watching me type on the keyboard, and he just now laid his head on the same board.

When I said 'this morning", I meant early, 3 AM, thanks to Tiger. She has learned to rattle the coathangers in the closet to wake me up.:D Also, she will walk over me when she thinks it is time for me to get up. The other morning she was "twanging" the bed springs to get me up. ( Fortunately, I do go to bed early.) Smart kitty! And now she is too is getting large - approaching 9 lbs. in weight! She is only 10 months old.

Yorkster, thank for sharing your Wylie. He looks to be a large cat even from that limited photo. The size of his head, is double that of the usual domestic cat. Of course some of that is fluff, but just the same, he is obviously a large cat. And you say he is only 1 year old? Prince is becoming a regular at the keyboard pillow. Just now he was sitting on a stool next to me. I began to pet him and he responded with kitty love bites. He appears to be very loyal, even for a 2 month old kitten. His fur is not long, but not too short, perhaps we could say "medium" length. Also noting, on many of the pictures of the various Maine Coons, most of them have long fur, like your Wylie. Does Prince's medium fur length take away from his "pure" breeding standards?

......wayne

yorkster
06-04-2002, 10:00 PM
Wylie's fur was more medium length until about 10-12 months old. I will see if I can find a couple kitten pics of him to post.
I have heard that it's not uncommon for MC's to have shorter or less fur until they are older, and it has certainly been true with Wylie.

Also........they keep growing until about 3-4 years old (not 2 lbs. a month obviously :D , but some)

wayne0214
06-14-2002, 06:35 PM
(An update on Silver Prince.) Prince is now 2 1/2 months old, already he is up to 4 lbs in weight and is about 25 inches long from nose to tail's end. He is already about the same size as his mommy! At this rate, he may exceed the size limits for a standard Maine Coon, by the time he is 7 months old! I like all cats whether domestic or wild and Silver Prince may represent both types by the time he is full grown!:D

Thanks for you supporting comments, all. This picture of Silver Prince was really an impromptu affair. My neighbor came over and set the 'puter up and we needed a picture of my cats, any one of them. So, I ran into the other room with the camera and caught Silver Prince on a storage shelf, and took his photo. Normally, he doesn't have that "cougar" look about him. I need to figure out how to make the photos smaller, like that of your Wylie -which btw is a beautiful cat, also. :)

I have taken a few more photos of my furkids, but I am hopelessly lost on the procedure to get them into the 'puter. I suppose today, I need to learn how to take photos with the camera, and then write out the procedure on paper. There is just too much for my "one-mouse power" brain to remember. :( :o

I have taken pictures of Snow Cat, Tiger, Blue, Fawn, Cookie, Derek (Mercury) the kitten, Amy, Otis the kitten, Nightshade, and Ophelia. Once I learn the procedure for placing them on the 'net, then possibly next week you will all be able to see them:cool:

Amberlee, considering me with a "new box" in hand, yes, that too! I caught him just as he was getting ready to run from me with the new flashing box! At any rate, he is a very affectionate kitty, and as of late he is sleeping with me nearly every night on the covers. :D

Wayne,what a beautiful pic of Silver Prince:p
Looks like a monochrome(like the old ones) picture all brown and white, except for his eyes, what a expressive look!
What's wrong with cougars, aren't they beautiful critters. And the attitude, you can feel that something is about to happen!
Also like the white background, only one thing is important in that picture and is the cat!

We want moooore.....

Koxka, cute kittys! :)

The only way I can tell if the file is attached, is to re-check the post after the system takes you back. If there is another way to do it, I don't know what it is

Silver Prince astounds me with his growth. Now he is up to 4 1/2 lbs and is 23" long from nose to tail:eek: At this rate, and him being only 10 weeks old, the two lbs a month (as Yorkster jokingly suggested), should not be out of the question:D

(Prince knows I am talkng of him because just now he came up the ramp and stated to sniff my hands. I just got through eating a stir-fry beef and brocolli.):)

Wayne, are you sure Silver Prince is not really a couger??! :D :D :D
I think he is growing even faster than my Wylie did!
It's a good thing he is such a sweet, gentle kitty. :)

yorkster, I have seen kittens grow, but nothing like Silver Prince! He is almost as large as Fawn- and at about 11 weeks of age. When He plays with the other kittens, Prince look out of place because of his size. He is also developing intelligence faster than the average cat. Prince has the loudest purr. I'm curious as to when he will quit growing, and also, how large can a domestic cat get. (maybe 25 lbs?) You may be correct, in that I read somewhere that cougars do make fine pets, if you train them as kittens.:D (Imagine, a 250 lb kitty!)

well Wayne, I am not sure when they quit growing, but Wylie did slow down at about 10-12 months. He is still growing a little bit, but not too much. I have heard that MC's will continue to 'fill-out' until about 3 years old.
It seems to me also that (sometimes) the bigger the cat, the more gentle they often are. :) At least that has been my experience.
I hope you are still taking picks of all your kittys!

Wayne Silver Prince is just beautiful! They grow up to 3 or 4 years old and they will slow down after that. I think it is true the bigger the more gentle. Thats why they are called Gentle Giants. My Shadow didn't grow at first but that was because he was a stray and wasn't properly cared for. When he got some TL C and all the food and water he wanted he started growing and he is still growing and filling out. he is three years old now! I dealy love him! Who ever dumped him on my doorstep, lost out on a very nice kitty. if they didn't think anymore of him than that, They sure didn't deserve him! I'm thankful I found him. Mom of Shadow,Dixie,Snuggles,Midnight,Shoe-shoo and Abe as well as my dogs Toastco, Lady and Corrie

Toastco, the same on Silver Prince. I had him up for adoption, but the people who was interested in him backed out. At the time I did not know he was a Maine Coon. Now I am glad that no one claimed him, because now, I wouldn't part with him, for love nor money. He is such an affectionate kitty. Even his two female litter mates, Tiara and Pepper, are large for their age. I don't know whether to get him neutered or not. Of course, it is a little early to be thinking about that.:)

We think that our baby Miss Chevious has some Maine Coon in her. She is 10 weeks old and already weighs 4 pounds! She is a very big girl. She has very different eyes, well different from every other grey and white cat I've ever seen. They are blue and a greeny-hazel color. She is so cute!!

Here is Miss Chevious...

Miss Chevious is a little (big) doll! I like the name too! :)
She looks like she is going to be big by looking at her paws. We would like to see more pics of both your kitties.
