I woke up a few hours ago and noticed that Frankie has a swollen sack coming out of his right eye.

It's pretty gross looking.

I really hope it's not what I think it is: cherry eye.

I already called the vet and they will be able to see him in about an hour.

I am just waiting now.

I have already had two cries this morning. I hope it's just an irritation.... but it looks like cherry eye. It's very nasty.

I will take a pic of it and post it later.

For now, I'll just post pics that I took in the last 10 days.
sigh...

Beenie and Frankie snoozing on the couch.
Yes, Beenie is wearing a diaper. She is in heat.
Will get spayed in a month.

Perhaps Frankie's eye is just scratched? Did he & "the Bean" play a little rough? I hope he'll be okay. Please keep us posted.

Carmen, those pictures are gorgeous! :)

Tell Frankie that Peej knows what it's like to have eye problems and it's not very fun, so he sould get better very soon.

I got back from the vet.
I’m at the office now and Frankie is with me.
Dr. Dunn confirmed what I was afraid of.
He has cherry eye and will require surgery.
She said it’s not urgent but needs to be taken care of.
If we don’t take care of it he may go blind later in life and he will have the sack protruding until it’s fixed.
I scheduled for them to operate on Oct. 4th. He was supposed to get neutered at the end of October but since this came up they will do both at the same time so they won’t have to put him under anesthesia twice.
I am very sad. He looks miserable with this thing in his eye. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him. I have already applied an eye cream that they gave me for him. I need to put it in twice a day.

Don't worry Carmen. Maggie had cherry eye when she was a little pup too. I was so scared for her, but she pulled through just fine and it has been great ever since. Have not had problems with it ever again. Maggie was about 3 months when she had her surgery. She probably only weighed 3-4 pounds, so I have them run blood tests on her to make sure she was okay before surgery and that she could handle the anesthesia. Those are great pics of Beenie and Frankie. They look so comfy snoozing away in your lap.

Awww, Carmen, I'm sorry, but if I can add a little sunshine, I'd like to.

This isn't too terrible. It's treatable and you caught it very early. Maggy had to have her little eye operated on because she had an ulcerated cornea. I, too, was devasted so I know how you feel. And Maggy was the same as Frankie in that it didn't seem to bother her.

Good luck!

Ah Carmen, I am sorry to hear that. But you are a good Mom and caught it early. I am sure Frankie will be fine. It will probably be more stressful on you. {{{Big Hugs}}} to you and Frankie. And thanks so much for sharing those precious pictures. Both of your kids are so cute.

Frankie's gonna do just fine. He's a strong little boy and with a mom like you, he'll heal in no time. Try not to worry about your little boy. :)

Thanks you Gemini9961 and Lobodeb for reassuring me.

I can't believe both your Maggies have had it.

How long did it take for them to heal?

Did they have to wear a cone afterward? For how long?

The vet said Frankie will have to wear one after.

Did they get it in one eye or both?

The vet said that he may, in the future, get it in his other eye.

I also want to thank everyone here at PT. You have been a great support system and outlet for my doggy worries. It's not like you can talk about your dogs to anyone. Many people don't really care. I know everyone here does because they have animals too.

Thanks for your compliments on the pics.

Oh goodness, give that man a great big hug for me!
Cherry eye is pretty comon & thankfully you caught it in time. I've known many dogs that have had it & all came out just fine after surgery. Good wishes are coming your way.

Quoting Beenie's mom:

How long did it take for them to heal?

Maggy's eye was sewn shut for 2 weeks. The vet put a little button over it so she wouldn't look as funny. She looked so cute.

Did they have to wear a cone afterward? For how long?

Yes, she did. She wore it for the 2 weeks that her eye was sewn shut. She took it extremely well. The day we brought her home from surgery, she wanted to play.

Did they get it in one eye or both?

Maggy only got it in her left eye.

The vet said that he may, in the future, get it in his other eye.

Our vet said he wouldn't be surprised if she got an ulcer in the other eye. It's very common with the bulgy eyed dogs. My monster-in-law says she can tell the difference in Maggy's eyes. I can't.

We haven't had any problems ever since and it's been almost a year now.

How long did it take for them to heal? She was healed very quickly. I had to put some ointment on her eye before and after but other than that she was fine.

Did they have to wear a cone afterward? For how long? No, she didn't. They just stitched the "cherry eye" back into her lid and she was good to go.

The vet said Frankie will have to wear one after.

Did they get it in one eye or both? Just one eye. They told me as well that she could have it happen in her other eye or re-occur in the same eye, but that was now 2 years ago and she has not had problems since.

The vet said that he may, in the future, get it in his other eye.

The sack is bigger and more red today. :(
I feel so bad for him. I can't bear to look at him.

If it continues to grow I'd call your vet. It will probably grow a little more, but if it grows rapidly or huge then I'd probably start to worry a little.
Good luck to you all!

Another dumb question if anyone knows....

Can cherry eye go away by itself without surgery?
Just wishfull thinking.
It seems less red than this morning.
I'll quit bumping up this thread with my paranoid quesions .... I'm probably annoying everyone with it.

I have no experience with cherry eye so I can't answer your questions but i'm sure no one sees them as annoying, and if they do, that's their problem. ;) Everyone worries!

Poor Frankie man. I hope it "goes away" soon. Hugs to you both.

So sorry FRANKIE. But, things will be fine now. Mommy takes
such good care of you and caught it early. Reassure her, she's
taking it harder than you are. We're sending you tons of yummy
hugs and kisses. And, we're thinking of you. Feel better soon,
sweet baby.

Carmen, had you not bumped it, I may have missed it.
Who else can you go to, but PTer's? That's why we're here.:D
Hugs and kisses for you too, big yummy ones.

No, don't believe it goes away by itself. They will surgically
remove it & he should be fine. I think dogs recover a lot faster
than people do. Dogs don't sit around a & worry about things
like we do.:D They live in the moment. Frankie will be good as
new.:D
