Juno and Rio had their rugs put on today for the first time this year! It’s finally started getting cold enough at nights. Most of the other horses have been rugged for weeks ! Sorry to rant, but it annoys me when people rug their horses just because its Autumn, and not because it’s actually cold, it defeats the whole point of wearing a rug. It’s like if you wear a jacket inside, then go outside – because you’ve already been wearing the jacket, it doesn’t give you any extra warmth when you get outside. Did that make sense? Jerry isn’t wearing his rug yet, because he has a thick enough coat.

Wow what great pics !!!!!!!!!!!! I love em' all, it has been quite awhile since I have been around horses, I grew up on a farm with plenty of them but those days are over

Many people put rugs on their horses early to prevent them from getting a winter coat so it's easier to groom them, they look not as shaggy, and it easier to tack up. A lot of my friends have shows in October/early November- and you cannot have a horse with a winter coat in the show. Most of the people at the local stables here do that- and they place heavy rugs on them in the winter to keep them warm since their winter coat is not that thick. :/

Duke's my favorite...what breed is he?

Hes a Thoroughbred x Irish Draught - mostly Thoroughbred. He's new on the yard, and really sweet! He's a real friendly guy

YLL - I understand some people's reasons for rugging so early, it's just that most of these horses have their heavyweight rugs on already, that they'll be wearing all winter, and because it's not really cold yet, when it does get cold, they're not going to get the warmth they need.

Some of them do only have lightweight rugs on - like Juno and Rio Last year I showed Rio through the winter, so I can understand the need for lightweight rugs on some of the horses
