I saw this bumper sticker on a car in front of me today:



OK, so I don't even know WHERE to begin on that one. Except to say that I was offended by it. And I don't even know if I believe in God or not! I can't imagine how much that must offend someone who is religious, no matter what political party they're in....right? Please tell me I'm right.

So God's choosing parties now?

Let me quote a bit from a story I read at http://www.tnr.com/blog/rnc?pid=1972. Written by a reporter attending the Republican National Convention last week.

"This morning I stopped by a meeting of the Iowa GOP delegation, attended by Nebraska Senator (and potential 2008 candidate) Chuck Hagel [...] Soon after Hagel spoke, the acting state Republican chair--an African-American man in a white cowboy hat named Leon Mosley--urged his delegates, 'Let's remember what's paramount in our life: God ... This is the GOP: God's Official Party.' At that, the room burst into sustained applause. Behold, the Republican base."


I know the Dog House is supposed to be for "slightly" controversial stuff...and this may be more than "slightly" controversial. Let's try to keep it calm so I don't have to delete the thread. Thanks!

It's quite a big shift isn't it? It seems so at odds with the traditional republican platform that I have difficulty reconciling the two. But yes, the neo-conservative republican agenda is HEAVILY Christian oriented.... folks like Pat Buchanon are even expressing concern....

Well, I believe in God and I am a Christian. I am also a Republican. I find that bumper sticker to be both offensive and tacky. THAT does not speak for any GOP members that I know. I totally hate this election year stuff and the hatred and childish antics that it stirs up. It is so sad what men can stoop to.

I don't hate anyone. I love my country and pray for what is best for the future. I do not understand why folks hate President Bush either. He is a decent, intelligent and dependable president. I will feel safer in these awful times - knowing that he is in office for four more years.

The implication of that bumper sticker that the Republican Party is more favored by God is stupid. So is the assumption that the GOP is Christian and the Democratic Party is not. Sure, there are some right wing extremists that are in the GOP and they make noise. At the other end are the left wing radicals who make the Dems look like baby killers and satanic, evil tree huggers. It's crazy.

I agree with you Debbie. I am a Christian and I find that rather much offensive. I siriously doubt that God is taking sides in politics, an institution created by and for men and men alone.

Politics should have NOTHING to do with religion, and vice versa. But...boys will be boys and go to the lowest common denominatior if they feel it will get them ahead somehow

In my opinion, "God's Official Party" is not Repulican, Democrat, Libertarian, etc. It is a group of God fearing humans who put God first, above any party affiliation. I might not have been offended if I saw a bumper sticker like that (since I happen to be a Republican voter, most of the time), but I can see how other's would be. There are plenty of Believers who don't necessarily adhere to the Republican party's beliefs.

It seems to have been forgotten by people who came up with that bumper sticker and who believe themselves to be so religious.

I looked up "Blasphemy" in the dictionary. Among other definitions were:

1. The act of claiming for oneself the attributes and rights of God.
2. The act of claiming the attributes or prerogatives of deity.
