I measure about two inches behind the ears. The reason is my breed- they have a long neck and if you measure farther down, which gets into the muscle of the that powerful neck, the collar will be capable of going over those tiny ears. I also use nylon martingale collars as they are less likely to go over the head.Originally Posted by BC_MoM
With my shepherds, I measured at the first notch in the neck ( what we would call a "adams apple like area", but that ear set was not a concern of having the collar get over the ears.
Then I add 2 inches for a normal dog. What type of collar are you looking for? Buckle, martingale, nylon choke, etc?
