Well, as everyone knows, Pi are square.

Every Boston Cream Pie I've ever seen has been round, so by simple logic it CANNOT be a pie.

Dictionary.com defines the items of contention, thus:

    pie1    /paɪ/ Show Spelled[pahy] Show IPA
    –noun
    1. a baked food having a filling of fruit, meat, pudding, etc., prepared in a pastry-lined pan or dish and often topped with a pastry crust: apple pie; meat pie.
    2. a layer cake with a filling of custard, cream jelly, or the like: chocolate cream pie.
    3. a total or whole that can be divided: They want a bigger part of the profit pie.
    4. an activity or affair: He has his finger in the political pie too.
    5. pizza.

cake   /keɪk/ Show Spelled [keyk] Show IPA noun, verb, caked, cak·ing.
    –noun
    1. a sweet, baked, breadlike food, made with or without shortening, and usually containing flour, sugar, baking powder or soda, eggs, and liquid flavoring.
    2. a flat, thin mass of bread, esp. unleavened bread.
    3. pancake; griddlecake.
    4. a shaped or molded mass of other food: a fish cake.
    5. a shaped or compressed mass: a cake of soap; a cake of ice.
    6. Animal Husbandry . a compacted block of soybeans, cottonseeds, or linseeds from which the oil has been pressed, usually used as a feed or feed supplement for cattle.

    ---

So, indeed we have a conundrum on our hands. The dessert food item, commonly called Boston Cream PIE, could be certainly also be labeled a cake. What to do?

I, not being a SMA (subject matter expert) on cake OR pie would humbly request a recess from the board to allow time for research to be done.

Or, if a recess is not availble, I offer the follow answer.

'Clearly, calling the dessert commonly known as Boston Cream Pie (hereafter BCP), a pie, when it could certianly be called a CAKE, is an attempt by the generally left leaning denziens of the Bay State to confuse the populace into thinking that BCP is a healthy alternative to any cream based cake. My support is that Pie has previously been said to be a 'healthy alternative' to cake.'

I yield the floor back to the lady from Delaware.

Well, by definition, a BCP should technically be named Boston Creme Cake. The #2 definition in pie as noted above, is quite a contradiction in itself, don't you agree? How can a cake be a pie, or vise versa???

May I further state, that my previous reference to pie, being "healthier" than cake, was meant to mean the "true" pie, and not any cake that tries to disguise itself as pie. Cake has shortening, eggs, lots of sugars, etc, whereas the real pies such as fruit or mincemeat (please explain mincemeat to wifey!), really are healthier. Would you rather eat fruit or lard???

Au contraire! I have baked a Boston Creme Pie/Cake in a square cake pan, so does that make it a cake?
I really think there should be some kind of legislation to rename this dessert, so people know what they are really eating. A pie lover might be appalled to find out he's really been eating cake all along.............

    1) It's not "at" ground zero.

    2) It's legal, it's within bounds of the zoning for the area, what's the issue?

They'd better hire a damned good security force if and when it actually gets built, but that's on them.

Is the Mosque a memorial for the Terrorists that rammed the planes into the World Trade Center? That is really sick if it is.

No, Bonny, it is a place of worship. Not all Muslims are terrorists.

If you are a Christian, are you like the abusive Catholic priests or the murdering Crusaders? Of course you aren't. You might even feel some shame at how those two groups represent the Christian faith.

I am sure many Muslim people feel the same shame, and do their best to live as decent human beings.

The building of a Mosque near ground zero can be the beginning of unity, forgiveness and healing, or an opportunity for hate and anger to thrive.

    It's up to us.

    ^ Well said.

At the centre of Islam is peace. Extremism is as akin to Islam as the KKK is to Christianity; both are monstrosities of humanity cowering behind something they see as justification for their evil.

    LH,

I think many posts on this thread have been wired to inflame on the basis of (sigh, yet again) different countries. Bravo on your posts, as ever. I believe that when one refuses to get out into the world and explore other ways of doing things, one becomes so cocooned in one's own affairs that it's an easy way out to blame Johnny Foreigner for everything. I think if this board is generally incapable of discussing other nations' ideas, then we must indeed adopt the afore mentioned 'you keep yours, and I'll keep mine' approach.

This is where our forefathers come in, freedom of speech & religion. I just find it insulting to build a Mosque. Why not an ecumenical place where everyone can worship together? That would make more sense to me & be able to share their cultures & religion the melting pot of friendship & peace.

Great idea, Bonny - maybe there should be one of those too.

I wonder how many would actually show up? I would hope no one would damage it. There are fundmentalists in all faiths, and unity of faith can be seen as blasphemy.

Seriously, if you can find out who to contact, send them a letter or email!

Because it's an Islamic group who bought the property, and they want to build a Mosque.

Is that a wise decision? Personally, no.

However, it's their property, and they can do with it as they see fit.
