Shadow (RB ) was a Husky/Shepherd mix -
that I swear could get "lost" in the back yard!

She took an "unathorized stroll" one night with her lil Mini-Lab buddie
(who was ALWAYS allowed to run loose
but who never managed to get "lost")...
I had let Shadow out to "powder her nose" before bedtime -
NOT knowing the lil Lab was *waiting* in our back yard...

Off they went!
I hollered, walked, and drove for hours...
and all I manage to attract back home was the Lil Lab.
"Where's SHADOW?"...
Wag! Wag! Wag!
She took up a vigil on my front porch; but that didn't help FIND Shadow.
Pouring rain by morning; I started driving & hollering again.
Got a cell phone call from a mile away...
"Was I missing a dog named Shadow?" (Thank Heaven for ID *Tags*!)

There she was -
*soaked* to the bone and huddled on a friendy strangers back porch.
She'd accepted a bite to eat; but wouldn't leave their porch.
"Homing Instinct?? No such thing with Shadow!

She never really "ran off" - as long as she was being watched like a Hawk AND
was being "talked to"...
But ignore her for half a minute - Ho Boy!

I can't believe Alden would surprise you that way! What a great guy and thoughtful man!!!! There is now way in the world my husband would ever surprise with a puppy.
