I went out to the hazel wood,
-ecause a fire was in m- head,
And cut and peeled a hazel wand,
And patted m- faithful doggie's head;

And when white moths were on the wing,

I flung the stick into a stream
For good old Laddie to fetch out.

When he had laid it on the ground,
I went to throw it -ack again,
-ut he spotted something in the -rush
And stared as if it had called his name.

It was a forgotten old tennis -all,
Gre- with age, and languishing there;
I threw it hard, and Laddie, happ-, ran
Chasing his old lo-e through the morning air.
