With every day she is gradually getting worse. The vet thinks that the masses in her inner ear were serious and he said that they were not operable, because of where they were located. The vet that she is going to is absolutely wonderful beyond words. I love the clinic and I love each and every vet that works there. Cassie was going to a vet that was very inexpensive, but also pretty crummy. They kept perscribing antibiotic after antibiotic without finding out the root of her problems. My mom got fed up with their mediocre "cures" and she began taking Cassie to the same wonderful vets that I take Graham, Kersey & Minion to. They are really too expensive, but the vets are incredibly wonderful and they are so thorough with their care.

We are just babying Cassie and helping her out alot. She is unable to do what she used to do with ease. Walking has become an effort. We are not giving up yet. We are going to keep trying and keep hoping our little dollie girlie will be OK. At this point I am real worried. We have to look at her quality of life if she continues to go downhill. It's not fair to her to make her go through this. She has been so uncomfortable all summer with her constant ear infections, her many hot spots, her two ear hematomas, her itching and scratching and her feavers, her hearing loss, and her reduction in vision, and finally, these masses in her inner ear which are causing that aweful inner ear infection that just won't quit. She is such a gentle, kind little soul.

I feel so bad. My heart breaks when I see her. I can hardly stand it.

    Leslie I am just seeing this now and want to tell you how upset and concerned I am. I just adore Cassie and she was the first puggily I met when I came to PT. I remember your early posts about your 'then' two babies, Cassie and Graham. She has been through so much, bless her sweet little puggily heart. I remember her accident at the dog park and we all anxiously waited for her to recover from that and now this. Little Cassie will definitely be in my prayers. I know that you and the vets are doing all that you can, and so now we just wait for things to hopefully start to "work." Leslie, how old is Cassie? I don't remember if I ever knew that. {{{{{HUGS to precious Cassie!}}}}}

Thank you so much everyone for the well wishes. It means alot to me.

Cassie is 9 1/2 years old. I guess that is old for a pug. Pugs are not extremely healthy like most of the other toys are, therefore, they don't live as long. When I talked to a wonderful lady who breeds pugs, who used to be in one of Graham's agility classes, she told me that she has never had a pug live more then 9 years. She said that 6-8 years is typical.

Cassie is not from good bloodlines. As a matter of fact, she's a puppy mill dog. The family who bought her and had her for 7 years before realizing that dogs are not happy locked in laundry rooms for 12-14 hours per day, bought her from a flea market. A real dirty flea market that didn't know anything about the breed. They also did not have the parents and they did not seem to like dogs at all.

A brief explanation for those who don't know who Cassie is: About 2 1/2 years ago while I was on my lunch hour at work, I was standing in line at the resturaunt that is on the main floor of my building. Standing in line behind me was one of my co-workers and she was chatting with someone about this pug who needed a home, or else she was going to have to take her to the dog pound. I immediately perked up, as I LOVE pugs and I wanted a small companion for Graham and my mom.

Let me rewind a bit. At that time, Graham was living with my mom because Dan and I were unable to find any dog friendly apartments at the time. So Graham was living with "Grandma" and he was lonely for canine company (at least I thought so). I wanted him to have someone to talk to while both my mom and I were at work. I wanted a smaller dog because my mom could not handle a big dog as well as she used to be able to do. My mom and I always loved pugs and so I could not pass up the opportunity to rescue this little pug from her previous home. I asked my mom that same night if she would be interested in adopting an older pug. She thought it sounded wonderful.

So the lady who owned her for 7 years, brought her over to my moms house one day, and Cassie fit in perfectlly.

When we found an apartment that allowed dogs, we knew that we were taking Graham, but I could not have taken both dogs and left my mom with no canine friends. My mom is my best friend and, although Graham and Cassie got along fine, they never played or bonded too much, and I would not have taken both of the dogs out of my moms house. When I got Cassie, my mom immediately wanted to keep her when I took Graham. So Graham came with me and Cassie stayed with my mom. I visit her ALL the time, so I see Cassie several times during the week, and every time my mom came over to my apartment and now my house, she brings her two dogs: Ritzie the shih tzu, and Cassie the pigalett pugalett.

    Phew that was a mouthful

What a face! So glad she has had a wondergul last 2 1/2 years with your Mom - nobody can spoil a dog like a grandma, I swear! - and that she has people who really love her. She is a grand old dame, you can see it in her face, but I hope she is feeling better!

    Leslie,

I did not know the whole story of Cassie's life, although
I did see earlier pictures of her that you had posted. She
is a beautiful girl and she's come so far from a very sad
earlier life. God Bless her little heart.

I can feel the sadness in your heart on seeing Cassie
suffer so. I'm going to double up on the prayers that
she can be helped & made well again. You, Dan and your
Mom are doing everything humanly possible and it sounds
like the vets are also. We will all hope & pray with all our
might that Cassie can be helped back to health. Hugs &
Best Wishes from me & the pup. Liz.
