Thread: What is your litter stockpile amount?

  1. #31
I have enjoyed reading this thread and I know what Jen and Lizzie and everyone else that has more than a few cats feels like when they go to buy litter. I have always used Tidy cat clay and use to get the 30 lb bags at Walmart because that was the cheapest price but their prices went up and I started getting forty lb bags at Petsmart. The problem with that thought is my bad bache and bursititis and me trying to carry mulitple bags inside. It was too hard on my back so I started getting 20lb bags at Petsmart for 2.99. I have to get at least 6 bags a week for my gang. I go through at least 80 lbs of litter a week and sometimes more if the diabetics sugar is high. I would love to be able to buy ahead but with having to get so much I barely can get what I can for that week. Eventually I would like to get ahead but right now it is jsut impossible. I also hear the comments"My God, how many cats do you have?" etc

This thread is great. It just goes to show how you all care so much for your babies. I don't stock up as I don't need to, only having the two. I use a generic clumping litter and they get along fine with it. In fact any litter that I get if I get something that's cut down or on offer they never turn their nose up at. I'm very lucky I don't have litter problems with them.

Reading this thread makes me realise how great everybody on this forum really is!!

Since the fire, I have been to busy unpacking and such - I didn't realize the cats only had 20 pounds of litter left! That doesn't last them very long (clumping clay). I think I am going to switch to something more natural, hopefully it will last longer.

I used to stockpile EVERYTHING! From cat litter to paper towels to Cheerios and Chicken Noodle soup for Terry. When we moved into the motorhome, I learned in a big hurry that stockpiling wasn't going to be allowed anymore. Do you know how hard it is to break the stockpiling habit?

Sometimes I stockpile Feline Pine if Bi-Lo has a good price on it. I do stockpile the canned food and pouches that my kitties like as treats when thye are on sale.

I stockpile other stuff that is on sale too. I also hate shopping and like to save money.

I like the Tidy Cat's Small Spaces and awhile ago Pet Supplies Plus had them on sale for #27 $5!
So I bought all they had.
So I usually have at least 2 or 3 on hand. For awhile I was storing the litter in a small (18 gal) tote and was buying Walmart's Clumping in the #25 boxes. I ended up having like 100+ pounds of litter in the tote!
I also like Fresh Step and Scoop Away.
I liked the Everclean but it comes in cardboard boxes and I figgered out last year those don't work to well out in the garage with the wind blowing in the snow and the rain. So I try to stick to the plastic containers if I'm going to keep it in the garage. I don't really like to use the bags either b/c of the above reason.

I usually by 2- 40# at a time and that lasts me a month. Our PetSmart is in Baton Rouge so I don't go but once a month... thank God we don't have one closer! (I'd be there every day and have to get a second job!)

Next Question is... How much toilet paper do you have in your house for the humans? (bet everyone has more cat litter than T paper like I do!)

I've been getting that for my Dad's cat Miss Kitty. It really seems to have helped with litter box odors in his house and I don't notice as much dust.

I buy my litter (Arm & Hammer scoop) in 30# boxes. I prefer to have at least 2-3 boxes on hand at any given time. However if it's on super sale I'll buy as many as 6 boxes (that's 180lbs of litter!)

I've seen the Odor Eaters brand there, but haven't tried it. How does it work? Does it clump really well??

I have tried the Nature's Miracle litter, which I thought worked really well, but a few of my guys downstairs refused to use the litter box if it only had that in it. So, I had to put in other clumping litter to go with it. The fosters upstairs used it and had no issues with it.

Normally when I go to PetSmart, I would buy 4-5 of the largest boxes of the Exsquisicat brand clumping litter. I thought it worked ok, and for the money, it was good. I do like the new formula that Scoop Away is using. It's been clumping great, and works well on the smell.

I guess normally I have about 2 - 40lb pails unopened, plus one opened pail in each foster room and then another open pail in the downstairs for Furbee's potty in the kitchen, and another open pail in the "litter room" on the 2nd floor. The manager at PetSmart said the last time I stocked up "Either you have a lot of cats, or there's a mountain lion in your house!" LOL!

Yes, I think it does but I also mix it with the unscented Everclean. I also like the fact that it has a nice smell that's not overpowering like some of the scented litters. Catnapper was the one who started using it and started a thread about it so I decided to give it a try.

Usually about 60 pounds (27 kg) on hand... If I can't find a sale then a trip to Costco is in the cards.
