I've heard that a harness is better for small dogs that have long backs in proportion to their legs (actually that fits my Tibbie!). The harness gives better support for these dogs' backs because the body proportions make them more prone to back troubles & injuries. And this support is even more necessary if the dog tends to be a 'puller' & a bit rambunctious when on a lead.

Hi Purrley, how are things with little Tess? I would definitely recommend a harness since it's easier to control a chi with it. With a collar they can pull and hurt themselves. Buffy's harness fits snuggly and she's used to wearing it.

I've never had a small dog, but I would suggest the harness. Just make sure it's very secure. However, in my opinion, a dog should wear a collar at all times.

    Purrley,
Recently, I had a discussion with someone very familiar with "small dogs" and she said to always use a harness, not a collar. It has something to do with the structure of their necks and she said a collar could cause a major injury if the dog pulled too hard on it. I think the concensus is definitely a harness for little Tess.

Hi - Tess has been in a harness for over a month now - she's doing so well - potty is coming along really well. I love her so much and she loves me - what a gift from heaven!!!! I got her licensed over the holiday and now she wears a big star on her back - the licenses are in the shape of a star because of the Olympics being held here (according to Animal Services). I've found the harness to be the best for this little girl and now she's not biting at it - comes in real handy when I have to reel her in

I'm glad to hear that the harness is working well for you! Roxie has been using a harness since she was 8 weeks old, and we have had great luck with it too!

I vote for the harness My mother has a little chihuahua and I made her get a harness. With their little necks I just don't think a collar would be the safest way to go. If you or the dog pulled to hard it could hurt his/her little neck.

There are breeds where they suggest you use a harness not a collar I wonder if the chihuahua is one of them ?? I'll have to find the list and see. I know the boston terrier is on it but Im not sure about the chihuahua.
