Aw, man, I hope you at least think my Finn is a cutie. Just teasing, it's definitely personal preference...I don't prefer the show labs at all over the more working, field type...but, I can't think of a single breed that I prefer the show dogs over the working, field types...border collies, huskies, malamutes, etc...

That's really sweet! I think he's one of the most handsome I've ever seen, too...of course, I'm biased. But, I really do prefer the leaner, more rangier looking labs...as opposed to the ones that are shown. It's all just personal preference. Like I said earlier, I didn't ever want a lab. then, I met Finn. Can't control fate.

I'm not very fond of labs either, but I am kind of partial to yellow labs. They're very pretty. Working at a boarding kennel-all you see is labs all day, and each color has a distinct personality. Yellows tend to be more reserved and calm, but if you get them going they'll play all day. Blacks are one extreme or other-either very reserved or extremely hyper. And chocolates are just the craziest dang things I've ever met. There are exceptions, but everyone at the kennel agreed that that's the way the colors go.

I don't know why, but this thread makes me so incredibly sad. Why are so many people not fond of labs? What makes people not like them so much? Have you really taken the time to get to know one before you just write them off??

I know I shouldn't take it personally 'cause it's not aimed at me, but its really hard not to. This has been nagging at me, and I can't let it go, so please tell me why you don't like labs so much.

For me, it's not that I totally don't like Labs, they're just not really my type of dog. I think they're wonderful to visit and see pictures of but I wouldn't want to own one. I like the more intense breeds such as Tollers, Border Collies, Aussies etc. I aploogize if I might have made you feel that way....

Try not to let it bother you. I know, for me, they were not the breed I wanted for the simple reason that they were too common. I always wanted a more unique breed. But, and, I've said this a million times, you can't choose you fall in love with. And, Finn won me over. I know a lot of people think that labs are dopey, which some of them are. But, I've know some dopey german shepherds, too, and, they're one of the smartest breeds. Some people like a dog that is more independent and challenging, labs are for the most part very eager to please, easy going and love everyone, and, everything. Which isn't a bad thing, of course, but, for some, maybe they like more of a challenge. I know I had a friend that saw Finn and had never seen a lab like him. She'd always seen the ones on TV at the shows, and didn't like the way they looked. But, I don't even like the ones on the show circuit, I like the leaner type you see in the field more often than not. So, there may be some that just don't like the look of the ones they've seen...but, as was already discussed in this thread, show or field is a debate that will always exist. Some love the show labs (or show border collies, show huskies...) more than the ones you see that aren't being shown. Anyway...it's just simply a matter of preference. Labs aren't going to be for everyone, and, that's all right. For me, anyway, I'm fine with it, depending on the reason. I ran into a lady once that called all labs stupid, and, that's why she'd never have one. I told her she was stereotyping based on a couple of labs she'd known and that she was actually being the unintelligent one in her assessment. When the judgment of a breed is simply based on one or two dogs from personal experience, that's when it bugs me a little. Just like if you've run into a couple of "mean" pit bulls, it's not fair to the breed to judge them based on those two bad apples. People do it all the time, and, instead of doing research and thinking on their own, and, not branching out, they just close down. And, in that case, you definitely shouldn't take it personally, because they're the ones with the issues. Sorry I talk too much.

I like all of them, but if I had to choose I think I would choose the chocolate.

Labradors are just my kind of dog, i like a training challenge and dogs that are bred for completly different reasongs (Border Collies). Also because of overbreeding agression/ health issues are alot more common in Labradors these days. I have only met one field/ working Lab and she was an awsome sporting dog agile fast and smart, but they are very rare around our way .

    Each to their own.

Chocolate's were my favorite, until I started to train my aunts dog Alex. No she's not a purebred (she is part dalmatian) and I have fallen in love with blackies ever since!

I love labs and at one time I would have said chocolate but now I'm more partial to yellow. Oh heck, can I just have one of each?!
