My deepest gratitude to everyone for your heartfelt responses, thoughts and prayers.

Meeshe was kept overnight and then came home with three meds: liquid anitbiotic, pills to encourage his appetite and pills to help his anemia. I am saddened to report that he has refused to eat or drink and I tried baby food plus everything else I could think of to tempt him. Results of outside lab work (from talking to vet tech today since I never got a phone call yesterday) indicate he is severely anemic due to bleeding internally, with the suggestion that seeking a critical care vet hospital for a blood transfusion could buy him a little more time. He seems to be in such pain and is not doing very well . . . I made an appt. to take Meeshe back to talk to vet tomorrow and I have a feeling that it is his time to go to Rainbow Bridge. I will see what the vet herself has to say regarding his prognosis and then make a decision. If there is no possibility that he can regain health, I do not want to "buy him more time", only for him to linger and continue suffering.

I thank you all for helping me along through this with your kind words. Blessings to each and every one of you.

I can understand that very well. It would be the same here. When it is their time to go to RB I would feel very egoistic if I had to buy some more time for me- and would have to pay with prolonged suffering for my furkid.

But it's still heartbreaking. I hope there are still some moments of tenderness and purring between Meeshe and you to cherish forever

Oh I am so sorry to see this thread. Busy week I've only really been able to check in properly today. I add my prayers and hugs to everyone else's that Meeshe can be saved from leaving you just yet. Though as you say, his wellbeing and comfort is Number One. Remember to take care of yourself, too, it's hard to eat and do what we have to do at times like this but it's important that we stay healthy and calm as much for them as for ourselves. Good luck.

I am still numb, but wanted to let everyone who showed so much kindness to me and my "son" during his difficult time to know that Meeshe went to RB Friday morning at vet. Due to the results of the specialized outside lab work that indicated liver failure, vet concurred with my feelings that any further medical treatment would only prolong his suffering and detain the inevitable. Even a blood transfusion would only halt the FeLV+ destruction of his liver temporarily, and it would soon rear its ugly head to ravage his other organs.

I feel fortunate and blessed to have had him with us for this many years. I was astounded to learn (according to a fact sheet on FeLV from the vet's office) that 80% of cats depart within 2 to 3 years after diagnosis. He was FeLV+ from when I rescued him at about 6 months of age. I guess he beat the odds, and I am very thankful to have experienced the joy of knowing him and loving him so much. I hope his roomate, Muskrat (also FeLV+) is not too lonely without her "big brother", and that she continues to enjoy good health in spite of the odds stacked against her. I had a long talk with her about Meeshe, and explained that physically he is gone, but he is watching over her from RB. She can always view his grave from the screened-in porch where she resides; he is buried right next to Lily.

Blessings to everyone, and thank you for your caring sentiments, thoughts and prayers. Please know that your words have helped tremendously. I will try to formulate my thoughts and post a tribute in cat memorial to honour his life.

I am so sorry to hear about Meeshe- but of course this hard way was the only way to go.

He'll be waiting for you and his sis at RB- where he is happy and healthy.

I am so sorry to read this. I do believe you made the ultimate act of love, and courage, by sending Meeshe on ahead of you to the RB. Warm thoughts to you, and gentle hugs. RIP Meeshe.
