LOL!!! The mites move faster than Millie does! Interesting looking critter. How can you tell Millie is a female? My cats sometimes come across centipedes in the basement (when it's damp) and...well....yuck! I leave them be because they probably eat flea eggs if any are in the environment, but generally the 'pedes don't stand much of a chance. We had a giant garden slug that found it's way down there (haven't seen that one for a long time now) and I'd find it oozing it's slime trail all over the cat food dishes from the night before. Ewww! I found it amusing, but getting the slime off the dishes was awful. The cats never messed with Sluggo though.

Bump, waiting for answers to the many millipede questions on this board. Some of us are curious- me (How long do they live, what do they eat, do the mites ever um "leave their station", how can you tell if its a girl or not)

Mine very slightly from the African Giant's. Their diet is a little different as she eats rotten leaves, fruit, and veggies. Millie loves rotten food! Her staple diet is leaf litter. The mites usually do not leave the millipedes, or so it seems. I've never seen one stray from her yet. She is currently in a ten gallon tank with Bed of Beast as the substrate, as they need soil. I pour water on the soil once a day and mist the tank once a day as well. They need moisture to survive. We're still uncertain what species she is. I am trying to find that out right now.

As far as how I can tell she is female, she does not have grasping legs like males do. On the 7th segment on millipedes, males legs look a bit different than the females. So yes, she is female. Now to find her a mate, as I would like to breed.

Currently she is hiding under the soil so when I find her again I will take her out and count her legs.

WOW! Never in my wildest dreams think of a millipede as a pet, but to each their own. Congrats Millie!
