I don't like how it's shoved down everyone's throat everywhere you go, but all holidays are becoming that way, so I just ignore it.

One year an old boyfriend and I totally forgot it was Valentines Day and decided to go out to dinner... when we got to the restaurant, there were women sitting in the lobby with their arms full of balloons, flowers, stuffed bears, ect. We just stood there stunned. Both of us had forgotten. We laughed, went home, made dinner and watched a movie.

Andy and I are thinking of going to the Detroit Institute of Arts with another couple this year.

While I totally don't agree with the "love is evil" theme, I too will be alone on Feb 14th. I have decided to remain single by choice. Valentine's Day used to really bug me but the older I get, the more I ignore all the commericalism. To me it's just another day the stores get to push up the price of roses and make the almighty buck.

However, I do send a card to my Mom and two of my best friends because I love them dearly.
Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, champagne in one hand and strawberries in the other, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and screaming WOO HOO - What a Ride!

I think Valentine's Day would be so much nicer if it was looked at as a celebration of love, not focusing on lovers or couples, but love overall, between family, friends, children, pets, and so on.

I remember how it used to make me feel in high school, when all the popular girls were being called to the office to pick up bouquets and balloons and candy and so on. I felt so alone and unloved. That is what V-day seems to induce for the single person. The commercial world has promoted that, implying that your love equals how extravagent a gift you get for your partner.

It's sad though, the true meaning of most holidays tends to become lost nowdays by commercialism of them.

I forgot to add something that's been bugging me -- there are tons of puppies in the paper for sale. I read on a few of them, "Early Valentine's Present!" Urgh.

Talk about needing to wake up and smell the roses?

Since when was Valentines day ONLY about sexual relationships? Not in my family, nor amongst my friends either. I look at it as an opportunity (not that you need one) to express your love- romantic and non romantic to those you love!

I see it as a day to be smarmy and sappy, without consequence.

Since chances are that we won't be changing the world's perception of Valentine's day anytime soon, why not change your orientation to it?

  12. I'm with Cataholic on this one! When I was a kid my mother would always give me a gift on Valentine's Day ....and it was always something pink or red. Sappy...I suppose....but a nice memory....and I always send a card to my parents!

I spent many a Valentine's Day without a date. So? I'll never be a mother but that doesn't mean I think Mother's Day is stupid!

And, one of those things associated with Valentine's day around here- donate blood, give the gift of life to someone else.

I don't hate it because I think its associated only with a couple's relationship...............I just don't think its neccessary because those who you love should know you love them every day.......not just once a year. I don't think you need a *day* for that.

Same with mother's day, and father's day. I think my parents should know that I love them everyday, not just on those particular days. But of course, that's just me.

It's supposed to be a celebration of that love, like birthdays are a celebration of your birth. Of course I know I'm loved and am special but I still enjoy birthday cards and being made to feel extra special sometimes .

I don't like the commercialism of days like Valentine's day or Mother's Day etc., but I like the original ideas and intent behind them.
