My female, Sophie, is the alpha when it comes to treats and toys. She has actually made him stay in the other room when there was a new bone. However, my male, Toby, is always the one to bark at a noise or greet someone new. When they are playing outside Sophie is always on her back and Toby rolls around on top. He tries to get her to chase him, but she usually pretends to start running and then stops. He then runs to her. Very funny to watch.

Killian is alpha dog, but an even-tempered ruler with a gentle paw. Shiloh gets away with almost anything and if there is something he doesn't like, all he does is show her "alien face" (very scary, all teeth) and she backs off. (Who wouldn't!) Shiloh loves and respects Killian, but with any other dog, she is dominant. There are only rare occasions when Killian gives her the face (usually when she runs full speed at him, barking, in the yard). I must say that they get along very well. Killian gets respect from any dog that he meets. There is never an altercation with him and he even steps in to block Shiloh and I from loose dogs on our walks. He is fearless and I think he gets that across.

Of course, the humans in the household are in charge and the dogs both know that.

I have two GSD's, one female 2 yrs old, Sierra a Sable and one male that's 1 1/2, Buddy, black and tan. Both were rescues, and we've had Sierra almost a year before we got Buddy, and most days, in my yard, there is no Alpha. Buddy learns bad habits from Sierra, but that's about it! He won't bark at something until Sierra does, but I'll tell you, when Sierra wants to play, Buddy has no choice, but if Buddy wants to play and Sierra doens't, she sticks her fur up and shows her teeth, but Buddy doens't even seem to notice!! He just keeps on playing with her, then she'll give in and chase him!!
The two have been best friends since the day I brought Buddy home! Sierra was a 5 month old stray in a rescue, and Buddy was 1 year old and found living in a barn all by himself. In the 7 months we've had Buddy he's come a LONG way, but we still have to work with him. He's still afraid of my hubby!!! So it doesn't make for a happy household all of the time!!

Angie, your dogs are just gorgeous and look very happy. I have a rescue dog as well, and they are SO appreciative of a loving home. The thought of them having anything less in the past does not bear thinking on....

    BEAUTIFUL

Those pups are beautiful, and you are all so lucky to have each other. The next vacation, Dad will have to work a little in the bonding department. My lab Sonny doesn't have much to do with human guys, but after he bonded with my visiting son he longingly looks into the spare bedroom hoping he is visiting again......

Max is the alpha dog in our house, though Jake didn't give up his spot without a fight (resulting in a trip to the vet for a nasty bite). We're working on keeping ourselves the alphas - I'm pretty sure Max would take over if he could. He keeps bumping into us when he goes past - isn't that dominant behavior?

    Thanks for the siggy, Lexi_Lover!

there is a test u can do to see if ur dog(s) think ur the alpha.

*lay down on ur belly on the floor. call ur dog(s) to u. if the dog(s) lays down and trys to get their head under yours (they might lick u in the process,) then they know ur the alpha. BUT if ur dog just stands straight up looking down on u, then u might have to work harder on who's boss around the house.

I guess I have to work harder then, although my dogs mind my instructions, but quite frankly they looked at me like, "what the he.. are you doing down there on the floor?"

Ok what happens when I am laying down on my belly,
I call the dogs, and Rocky comes up to me, puts his head under
my chin while he is still standing, than
    goes behind me and sits
    and looks out the window?
Sheba looks at me than goes to the other side still
standing and looks out the window. lol
I guess I will have to try it again and see what happens
when looking out the window isn't as interesting. lol
Pepper passes, she tries to get under our chinsand lays down.
