Gonzo & Fozzie rarely bark, because I don't tolerate anything but alarm barking. And this is with Fozzie being a total Corgi... he tries to talk to me while I'm preparing his food or eating my own food! =P My command for quiet is a slightly harsh "SHHHH". They recognize this as a quiet command, because it's basically my "Alpha command", meaning they are to follow it no matter what. Of course, all of my commands should be followed no matter what, but this is the command that means "Stop what you're doing and look at me now".

Gonzo wants to alarm bark several times when some one is at the dog. So I set him up with that. I had a friend come to the door and ring the bell. I had Gonzo on-leash with a rolled collar positioned properly on his neck. After one bark, I did the "SHHHH" and popped his collar once, and he stopped. When he stopped what he was doing and looked to me, I gave him a jackpot of treats. Now, all it takes is the "SHHH" and whether it is barking or pulling toward another dog, he stops and comes right away. I'm doing the same with Fozzie, and he almost never barks at all.

Barking excessively is a really obsessive behavior. Even barking at a neighbors dog should not be tolerated, because the dog will begin to use barking in other situations where they're stressed or excited. It's also pretty much FACT that a tired dog will not bark. When they're getting barky, correct them, treat them for stopping, and take them out for a run until they're clearly tired... it will most likely stop the barking, because a lot of that is pent-up energy & frustration.

Put collar on Archie for the first time on Saturday and he has done amazingly well - much quieter even without it on and loads of praise for being such a good boy!

My fiance' was saying he wanted to get a shock collar for ours because he barks often but after time I have realized what he is barking for. He barks when he wants to eat drink or pee but he barks a bit more aggressively when he wants you to play with him. He doesn't bark too much at outside dogs, moreso he wants to play with them. Our problem is when company comes over he turns wild. I will have a great day with him but fear any company that may show. He isn't so bad with jumping and he is learning the "OFF" command but it's difficult because he really gets riled up-his doc says he sounds like an 8-day wound up clock. I will keep checking back for more ideas, I think I am going to also try the citronella (but with my asthma I can't tolerate strong scents) or "The Husher".
