Overflow is open water on top of a layer of ice. It's caused as a lake or river freezes--some of the water will rise and be on top of the ice. Often happens where moving water, like a river, meets a lake or stagnant water. On this lake, I think it's caused by the beavers--they will keep open holes in the ice all winter. It's dangerous because there is no way to tell how much ice is underneath the water. It's also hard on the dogs--getting soaked can be dangerous for dogs and musher in really cold weather. Fortunately for us, it's pretty mild today so a little water on their paws was no big deal.Originally posted by Mandy1
