Amber, from my experience with Popcorn and Muffin, they seem to be more comfortable when they're covered at night. Its actually more comfortable for me too, because that way, they don't wake up at the crack of dawn and start singing while we're still asleep. If you get him used to being covered, he will probably come to love it. My birds refuse to fall asleep at night without their cover. When I ask Muffin, "Want your blankey?" at night, she answers me with a sharp *CHEEP!!* That's her way of saying, "Yup...I want it!" She does the same thing when I ask her if she wants food when her bowls need to be filled. If I don't ask her about the cover at night, she screams and screams to remind me, and gets sooo happy when I finally cover her.

As for the carrots, my birds won't touch carrots if I give it to them in big pieces, but they LOVE it when I cut them into tiny pellet sized 'cubes'. The first veggie they came to love was raw brocolli, and its still their very favorite. Try feeding him peas too. (I defrost frozen raw peas and give it to them). My birds love it. He's still very young, so I know he'll come to love his veggies. The key is to be persistent, and eventually, he will eat everything. I know Logan fed him veggies when he was with her, so he should accept new foods faster than pet shop birds.
