I know you've said you're looking for a smaller dog, but, have you considered taking a retired racer into your home?
Not all of them are huge. I know of females that are full grown and hover around 50lbs. As a breed they are known for their sweet disposition, LAZINESS, loyalty, LAZINESS, character, LAZINESS, adapability, LAZINESS... and well, they're just plain lazy.
Many people describe them as being very "catlike" in some regards. They are fastidious with their own grooming, almost to the point of being vain, have short coats, so there's not much in the way of shedding... dont produce any body oil, so there isn't that "dog smell" to them. And being a breed that isn't bred and bred and bred... it doesnt have some of the health issues that are inherent in large breeds. no hip dysplasia in greyhounds, tyvm
