I sent you a PM, but this is what I'd recommend. I use plywood dog houses. One sheet of plywood can make one complete house. I make the roofs removeable so they are easier to clean out. Some of mine are insulated--that takes extra wood. Some of them aren't. The door is off-set from the centre of the house so they can get shelter from the wind. The dogs prefer the flat top house so they can lay on them or use them during play time. I have several huge dog house. The Husky Barn can easily hold 8 dogs and does when it's really cold out!
All the houses are filled with straw which gets replaced once a month or so. The straw keeps them toasty warm. They love it. Blankets ect get wet when the dogs lay on them in the winter and actually make the dog colder. They often drag the straw out into their little nests in the snow. In actuality, they use the dog houses most when it's raining. Most often they sleep in the snow!
