He doesn't really play with it. He just seems to try to scoop it with his lower jaw by pushing it towards the edge of the far end of the bowl, and then when he grabs a kernel or two, the rest of the surrounding food falls out. He only plays with it once he's done eating, but that's very very rare, and usually he "plays" with it in order to get it in a convenient spot to eat it (like out from underneath stuff).
I'm going to test a 2nd time tonight, but I'll see if I can do a "mock" dome bowl with my hands. I tried it once and it seemed to help bu making him move his head back and eat from the center of the bowl.
