I think I understand a little of how you are feeling, I live alone and have a mushy dog too. I also remember years ago when an intruder got in my house, he was scared away but even so I knew someone had got in my home, with me there too - my dog at the time, GSD Penny, wasn't a whole lot of help either - and I felt invaded and nervous for a long time after. About a gun, I am not sure, because they scare me, but, at the time, if guns had been legal and commonplace I may have kept one handy too.

When the door is secured and your neighbour looking out, you hopefully will feel safer.
