What you are describing is odd, because the WMV format should be automatically enabled on the media player.

Unloading media player and installing real player is probably not the first thing I would attempt. Besides both of the players cna be installed on the same computer at the same time. So, if you wanted to try loading real player you would not have to unload media player.

I like Jazzcat's idea of trying to update media player.

Is the operating system Windows XP? If it is, I would first try windows update and see if there is an update for media player. Hopefully, there is just something small out of whack and just updating it will put it back to the way that it is supposed to be working.
