I disagree on that last part. The worst thing you can do is throw an animal out on the street, letting it "fend for itself" and starve, be abused or get run over on the city streets, get attacked by wild animals in the country, revert to feral status and produce more unwanted kittens.

I lived in what some city people thought of as "the country" growing up, though it was more suburban than rural. People from the city would drive out and dump half-grown cats in our neighborhood at the end of every summer, thinking they would "do fine."

At least at a shelter they are fed, and kept warm and out of the elements, and have at least a chance at being adopted, albeit a slim one.
