That reminds me of these two dogs my DH always talks about.

When he was in Iraq the first time, these little mixed-breed puppies showed up at camp - some sort of shepherd mix. The sergeant or whoever gave orders that nobody could feed them, because he didnt' want them hanging around. So everybody started wondering why they slept right beside HIS tent every night!

They named them "Scud" and "Mine Dog".

These puppies were with them the whole time they were there - the soldiers made them little sandbag doghouse "bunkers" and gave them blankets and everything. They fed them MREs. He said they tagged along everywhere and made the war much more bareable. I don't know if anybody got to take them home or not - they were still there when DH left.
