I cant believe your talking about getting ride of her.. did you or yoiur family even look into what it takes to raise a dog. it not all fun unless you really love them..

also saying no or hitting a dog does nothing but make the dog afraid of you.. they dont understand the connection.

if you must give her away, call a rescue for boxers center..

next time get a stupid cat... you people dont deserve the love a dog can give......

i can semi agree w/ you but you need to grow up! there is no need to be as rude as you were! after all she is trying & asking for help! i believe she is young too so in this case it would also be her parents fault! if you could only give her nice pointers instead of ridiculing her it would help much more!

i love dogs better but CATS ARE NOT STUPID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That really irks me! this is a forum for all pets & there is no such thing as a stupid pet only STUPID OWNERS! like you!
Soar high & free my sweet fur angels. I love you Nanook & Raustyk... forever & ever.

murphydog - you are new here and obviously do not know this site well, but one thing I can absolutely tell you is that we all love our animals and support each other 100%. Many people who have been on this board a long time have learned better care due to the time and patience that the other members show.

On this site we try very hard to not be judgmental. We discuss, we teach, we learn, we disagree, but we do not flame. Socks is obviously a very young girl who is trying very hard to be a good pet parent and we owe her civil answers to her questions and concerns. JMHO

PS - Cats are not stupid - my cat rules us all!

I would suggest that you take you puppy to training like everyone else said.and if you do not have time, try Petsmart they have a great training pogram and there are day, night and weekend classes. please try i hope you dont give up your baby.also i would like to say i dont post very often and i am pretty new but i love this site and every thing ppl have to say. most of the ppl know what they are talking about so try what they are saying. one more thing when my sasha was younger the way we trained her was everymorning we took her out of the crate and said let go potty. I made it a game for her and made her feel like she did something GREAT and praised her alot and i still do when she goes potty. good luck and please keep us informed on how you and puppy are doing!

Quite a few puppy owners do not realise that it's not just about training the puppy. it's also about training yourself.

You need to train yourself to take the puppy out as often as possible and most importantly, straight after a meal and as soon as it has woke up.

As said before, really praise the puppy when it pees/poops outside and simply ignore any accidents indoors. Don't rub it's nose into any accident and don't scold for any accidents indoors.

All dogs aim to please and love to be loved. It won't take long before it realises that doing what it should outside will get him lots of love

    Good luck and be patient.

Despite what Murphy dog may think...

The command NO is the first fundamental word a puppy needs to understand. If they don't know the meaning of that word or a similar one such as STOP then you are in big doo doo for training. Although hitting with one's hand is unadvisable, taking a folded newspaper (1 small section) to the dog on its side is not unreasonable. The sound of the paper is what will get their attention. Eventually just cracking it against your hand will accomplish getting their attention.

As for house breaking, if it takes 1 year, then something wrong is being done. A puppy should be house broken (with possibly an occaisonal accident) by 5 months.

The mistake Socks has probably made is too infrequent trips outside, and not confining the dog to a crate initially. Although Murphy dog did point this out to her in a more than slightly condensending mode, of course he did not give Socks the formula to determine how long a puppy can hold its fluids and wastes.

Socks: The general rule is that you take the age in months +1, and that is the number of hours you should expect your dog to control its bowel movements inside the house. For example a 1 month old puppy might hold its puppy wee wees for 2 hours at a time. A 5 month old should be able to go 6 hours. Of course the smaller they are, the quicker after feeding you have to take them out for their doggy duties. Initially with my recent black lab puppy when he was 6 weeks, and ate some food, I had under 2 minutes to get him out the door!

Since your dog is older you should try the following:

    1. If it soils in the house, totally deordorize the spot, else puppy will believe it's ok to go there in the future. Get rid of the pads, as they are worthless.
    2. Plan frequent trips outside, especially after eating. Praise the dog when it goes. When it doesn't go- wait for it to go.
    3. If it's deficating at night, do not feed it past 7PM.
    4. Confine it during the day when you are not around. I tried the crate with my older puppy that I got at 3.5 months and she hated it. Fortunately I had an outside pen for her. My younger puppy adapted well to the crate- so age that you start does matter. If that's not available confine it to a single room in your house when you are not around. In warmer weather consider tying it outside (with shelter, water, and food of course), or confining it to a fenced in area.

Good luck with your new puppy.
