It COULD be. And it sounds like her family are also nasty people, from moosmom's later post about them. Perhaps in this case the rest of the family are not very nice people, either.
In general, however, threats, violence and vindictive actions aimed at someone's family are unfair and cruel. In most families, there is a "bad apple" ... and in some bad families, there might be a "good apple."
When my nephew was younger, he had a drinking problem, got several DUI's, and could have very easily killed someone. The rest of my family doesn't drink. (My nephew has since joined AA and is sober.) I would surely have hated to think that someone would threaten or injure my mom or my grandma, because of my nephew's problems.
