What a wonderful present. I'd do both, be practical and have some fun at the same time.
You could also buy bird feeders and seed....or buy a few things for a local shelter.
Would you so the sensible thing and buy what you might need in the furture?
Would you get those things that you always wanted but don't really need?
Or do a little of both, sensible and crazy?
