I've also noticed the water disappearing faster than one would expect--but I'm pretty sure it's due to evaporation. I have a decorative fountain that the cats don't drink from, and the water level drops pretty quickly in that one as well.

I agree that it's a dandy invention--especially for cats like my Kacey who insist on running water.
