Lynn, my fiancee, was recently in the hospital for surgery, about a four day stay. The first night the cats went to their normal sleeping spots. The following nights, Jackson slept on Lynn's side, and Fluffy slept at the foot of our bed. Lynn's first night back she had to nudge Jackson out of his "new" spot.
I am not sure if they realized a sleeping spot was vacant and filled it, or they were keeping me from being too lonely. I would like to pick the later reason.
