Aspen: I once found an ancient Golden retriever tottering down my street and tracked down his momma. Turned out that the meter person had dome the SAME thing, and the 17 year old puppy had wandered off. He was nearly BLIND, it would have been so easy for him to get killed.

In my experience, pepper spray just makes an angry dog angrier. A squirt gun is much handier IMO.
