I agree with Jen that cats like things up high, but as others have pointed out sometimes they just want to lie on a hard surface.

I was wondering that same thing other day. Bob and Joey have a nice window seat with a soft cushy pad. I look yesterday and Joey is laying about a foot away from it on a hard side table. I tried to get a pic, but she moved by the time I came back with the camera.
