Halters work very well for large breeds, when they start to pull, the halter pulls the dead down and stops the dog from pulling. I think they are more effective than a coke chain/collar- also less of a pain for the pup.

Great Danes are too powerful & big for a harness, at least that's what I would think.
Halters are alright, but there haven't been enough studies in my mind on the effects of it on the neck. Also I've met quite a few dogs who can just lock their necks and pull anyways.
