It's not ironic, it's just strategic. That's the way politics works. You release your ammo at the last minute so as to have as little recovery time as possible.
Just business as usual, really.
I have to say, if someone groped me and then years later ran for office, you can bet my fondled butt I'd holler about it the second they ran.
